DTvomHaus12 Aug 2021 19:46Good evening everyone,
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find information through the search. We are currently planning to replace our 30-year-old wooden windows (due to design and sealing issues). Now we are considering which type of window to choose. We are torn between a “true” aluminum window or a uPVC window with an aluminum cladding.
Our consultation appointment is next week, but I would like to have a preliminary opinion to bring into the discussion. What do you think: From my layperson perspective, the uPVC window with cladding seems to offer the best of both worlds—affordable combined with very durable and weather-resistant. Am I mistaken?
I am looking forward to your opinions.
Best regards

I used to be an aluminum window manufacturer and then a window dealer until 2019. Since then, I haven’t been asked about PVC/aluminum windows for a long time. In my view, they are more of a niche product in the market. We did not have them in our product range, but from a technical perspective, I see nothing wrong with them. For colored PVC windows without foil, I gladly recommend Gealan (PVC with a co-extruded color surface). For stress-bearing elements (especially entrance doors, lift-and-slide doors, etc.), I recommend aluminum.

DTvomHaus12 Aug 2021 21:44I was hoping for your reply :-) because I have found your previous opinions and comments very valuable. I came across this "niche product" through a window company in Düsseldorf that apparently installs it frequently and prefers it. We actually don’t want casement windows. Our idea is to create a kind of "lifetime ongoing renovation." This means that everything in our house is on a list with an approximate lifespan. When the time comes, the items get replaced and the countdown starts again. This way, we want to avoid any major backlog of renovations. By choosing aluminum components instead of plastic, we hope to achieve a lifespan of over 30 years (then we will be long retired) compared to 20 years. A bit of a bet on the future, so to speak ;-)
I have already saved the Gealan tip, thank you for that! I will look it up in the next few days.

No need to hope for my reply; my contact information, also available for newcomers, is under "Information" in my profile. I would be interested in the Düsseldorf window company, as my overview of PVC-aluminum providers is quite limited.

always looks more valuable than vinyl-wrapped plastic.I lack a direct comparison for vinyl-wrapped PVC windows. But regarding white windows, I would qualify the term "always": at least for branded products, I have to admit that in the first two to three years, I have to look closely with glasses to notice a difference between PVC and aluminum in surface quality. My partner lives in a house, I believe built in 2006, with white plastic windows that still look well maintained (which, in my opinion, is unfortunately not an industry standard but does happen occasionally). Therefore, I do not fundamentally condemn PVC for windows, although personally I would only use it for guest bathrooms and storage rooms. Even when we decided to discontinue our own production, PVC was still included for the economy range. It is simply a reality that original equipment homebuilders, when it’s time for windows, tend to cut costs in the wrong places. I see little point in prophesying eternal condemnation for PVC buyers and instead try to encourage them to mix materials (at least using aluminum for the stress elements). Renovation homeowners, however, in my opinion, are very wise to choose aluminum if they decide to replace. In this specific case, the replacement is probably a luxury; wood windows from about thirty years ago – and here I can only speak for those in the former western states of Germany – were of high quality and durable; but the original poster has already admitted that design was also a factor in the replacement decision. Otherwise, simply replacing the seals often works wonders.https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/
