Hello everyone,
I built a new house 4 years ago and have the problem that the bedroom on the upper floor gets very warm in summer (when there are several warm/hot days in a row).
Therefore, I am looking for a suitable split air conditioning system.
The bedroom is about 18m² (195 sq ft) in size, which corresponds to roughly 50 m³ (1,765 cu ft) of room volume.
It would be desirable to control the system with my smartphone (plus scheduling). Ideally, there would also be an option to connect it to ioBroker. I have an HVAC technician available who can install the system.
I have the following questions:
- I have a mechanical ventilation system installed. How does this work in combination with a split air conditioner? Is there anything I should consider regarding this? The bedroom has two vents (1 supply air and 1 exhaust air).
- Next door is a child’s room (about 20m² (215 sq ft) -> about 55 m³ (1,940 cu ft) of room volume). Does it make sense to switch to a multi-split system so that I can possibly cool both rooms with one outdoor unit? I do not currently need cooling in that room, but we might decide to add it in 1-2 years. Or would it be just as good to buy a separate single split unit for that later?
- Should the distance between indoor and outdoor units be kept as short as possible? For example, I wonder if the outdoor unit should be mounted directly at the gable at the top, or if I can also mount it down near the ground (there is a garden there, so the unit would be somewhat hidden
- Main question: Which air conditioner would you recommend for my needs/requirements? I am mostly looking for the best price/performance options.
- I’m happy to buy online — I read that air conditioners are significantly cheaper in Italy. Has anyone had experience with this? What about warranty, guarantee, and customs fees?
I hope to clarify some of these questions here
Best regards,
Markus

4.5 kW for only one Mitsubishi unit, so no multi-split system. I am still considering whether it would be better to install the air conditioner centrally in the hallway of the basement instead of in the 12m2 (129 ft²) guest room, where I would be working/sleeping during hot weather. Would it work with an 18,000 BTU unit to direct cold air through the door from the hallway into the room? The offer for the Samsung Windfree is 1000 cheaper.
Strategically, it would make sense to place it in the entrance area/hallway of the basement, where all rooms have access. I just think I might regret later having air conditioning in only one room.
Besides, the problem with a room of about 12m2 (130 square feet) is that the air conditioner blows directly on you, no matter how you position it.

Yes, the highest point in the house. The airflow should ideally be directed toward the warmest room, allowing the air to flow down to the ground floor. This decision needs to be made on-site.
If you have concerns, you basically have two options.
1. Prepare indoor units in all the rooms you want to air condition (power supply, refrigerant lines, drainage).
2. A ducted system, meaning a central unit that distributes cooled air through ventilation ducts to the rooms (common in the USA). This should not be confused with a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery.

Thank you. Then the decision is relatively straightforward – either have the air conditioning unit inside the room with the door to other rooms or the hallway open, or place the air conditioner in the hallway and let the cold air flow into the rooms through the open doors. A HVAC technician should be able to provide proper advice during the inspection, but so far, only the offer for one room has been made.
I have decided on the Samsung Windfree 12 (AR 12TXFAWKX/AR12TXFCAWKN)... the price-performance ratio convinced me. I will install the indoor unit in my home office on the ground floor so that I can also cool the hallway and other rooms a bit through the door. The outdoor unit will be placed in the parking area, with the pipes routed under the insulation from the ground floor down to the basement. A 70mm (2.75 inch) core drill will be used. What is better – running all lines (refrigerant, electrical) together in one conduit or separately, loose?
