ᐅ Experiences with air conditioning in new builds?

Hello everyone,

I built a new house 4 years ago and have the problem that the bedroom on the upper floor gets very warm in summer (when there are several warm/hot days in a row).

Therefore, I am looking for a suitable split air conditioning system.

The bedroom is about 18m² (195 sq ft) in size, which corresponds to roughly 50 m³ (1,765 cu ft) of room volume.

It would be desirable to control the system with my smartphone (plus scheduling). Ideally, there would also be an option to connect it to ioBroker. I have an HVAC technician available who can install the system.

I have the following questions:

- I have a mechanical ventilation system installed. How does this work in combination with a split air conditioner? Is there anything I should consider regarding this? The bedroom has two vents (1 supply air and 1 exhaust air).

- Next door is a child’s room (about 20m² (215 sq ft) -> about 55 m³ (1,940 cu ft) of room volume). Does it make sense to switch to a multi-split system so that I can possibly cool both rooms with one outdoor unit? I do not currently need cooling in that room, but we might decide to add it in 1-2 years. Or would it be just as good to buy a separate single split unit for that later?

- Should the distance between indoor and outdoor units be kept as short as possible? For example, I wonder if the outdoor unit should be mounted directly at the gable at the top, or if I can also mount it down near the ground (there is a garden there, so the unit would be somewhat hidden

- Main question: Which air conditioner would you recommend for my needs/requirements? I am mostly looking for the best price/performance options.

- I’m happy to buy online — I read that air conditioners are significantly cheaper in Italy. Has anyone had experience with this? What about warranty, guarantee, and customs fees?

I hope to clarify some of these questions here

Best regards,
Markus

It will hardly have any effect since cold air sinks, as @Mycraft already mentioned.
I would go with the option of 4 indoor units. Retrofitting will be much more expensive. Especially since you don’t have a ventilation system.
Why do people still build without a mechanical ventilation system? The houses are very airtight. If you don’t ventilate enough, you will get mold problems.
At least with the air conditioner, you can reduce humidity...

Because a ventilation system was supposed to cost 16,000€ and we consider other things more important for that amount of money. Unfortunately, money is limited.
Additionally, during the warm season there is sufficient ventilation since the windows are almost always open. Only in the cold season will we need to ventilate deliberately.

I am also looking for an air conditioning system. Old building, built in 1970, no central ventilation, the facade will be insulated (so now is the ideal time for a core drill). The primary focus is my home office – 10 m2 (108 sq ft). Optionally/later, the bedroom as well (both rooms are next to each other on the ground floor). How important is fresh air supply? The HVAC technician says just to ventilate (which lets warm air in) and then cool that air. In the home office, I ventilate very often during autumn/winter/spring – I have a CO2 monitor. When you are alone in such a room, the PC/screen also add extra heat. I have roughly looked at Daikin Sarara Ururu (which the company no longer stocks because it is too expensive), Mitsubishi M-Series, Panasonic, and Samsung. One technician wants to offer TCL from China. Are there any experiences with these manufacturers? Thank you.

At the moment, many things are probably difficult to obtain. We had Mitsubishi units in the old house, including in the office, and were satisfied. This time we are getting Remko, so I cannot make any statements about it yet.

You also have to consider noise levels. Samsung and Daikin claim 20 dB indoors and 40 dB outdoors, which is hard for me to believe. How can you "test" an air conditioning unit like that before buying?

I only choose Daikin now. You can’t go wrong with them. They are also whisper-quiet on the appropriate setting.
