Hello everyone,

I recently reorganized my living room and moved the KALLAX shelf that was originally there into the bathroom. I noticed that stains are now appearing quite quickly on the edges of the KALLAX shelf and are spreading further. These stains look like moisture or dirt marks, but they are difficult to remove. I usually clean the shelf with a slightly damp cloth and a mild cleaning agent.

I suspect that the increased humidity in the bathroom or possibly the close proximity to the sink might be causing the problem, but I’m not sure. Has anyone had similar experiences or can offer advice on how to prevent these stains permanently? I want to avoid the shelf being permanently damaged in the bathroom.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Tilda66,

Your suspicion is quite accurate. The edges of KALLAX shelves are often made of melamine-coated particle board, which is susceptible to moisture, especially at the cut edges that are sometimes unsealed. In the bathroom, humidity levels are significantly higher, and water splashes near the sink can directly affect the surface, which over time leads to these spots or discolorations.

This happens particularly quickly if the edges are not treated with a protective varnish or edge banding. To prevent further staining, I would recommend treating the edges with a water-repellent varnish or clear oil. Additionally, you should ensure that no direct moisture comes into contact with the shelf and that the bathroom is well ventilated.

If possible, a small protective film on the edges could also help keep moisture away.

If needed, I can gladly suggest some products or guides. I hope this helps you for now! 🙂

I would like to address this again and explain the problem in more detail: The melamine-coated panels are quite resistant to moisture on the surfaces, but the cut edges lack this protective layer because the raw wood or chipboard is exposed there. Due to the moisture in the bathroom, the wood at these points slowly swells and absorbs dirt more easily.

I recommend sanding the edges smoothly first to even out any rough spots. After that, you should definitely apply a sealant. Waterproof wood varnishes or special edge coatings for kitchen and bathroom furniture that are also steam-resistant are best suited.

Also keep in mind that constant exposure to splashing water (e.g., right next to sinks or showers) is generally problematic. If the shelf is placed very close to such areas, moving it or installing some kind of protective covering (e.g., a plastic edge or waterproof tape) could help.

If you like, I can also provide tips on proper maintenance in a bathroom environment.

Summary:
- Sand the edges
- Apply a waterproof sealant
- Do not place the shelf directly in wet areas

This is how you avoid the stains. Good luck!
