Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a BILLY bookshelf with drawers from IKEA, and I noticed that some of the drawers are quite stiff. Specifically, they don’t slide out or in smoothly, which is especially frustrating with frequent use.

I understand that these drawers can usually be adjusted to improve their movement, but I’m not entirely sure what adjustment options are available or the best steps to take when dealing with stiffness.

Does anyone have experience or a step-by-step guide on how to adjust the BILLY drawers to reduce stiffness? Are there common mistakes I should avoid?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello ELISMAU,

First of all: good and precise question! There are actually several factors that are important when adjusting BILLY drawers, especially if they are hard to open.

The BILLY drawers use plastic runners, which often have very little clearance. This can quickly cause friction if installed too precisely or if there is dust/debris inside.

Here is a detailed procedure that often helps:

1. Fully pull out the drawer and check for any visible obstructions (e.g., drill shavings, wood chips).

2. The runner on the side of the drawer usually has a small plastic strip that can be gently pushed inward or outward. There is often an adjustment screw or something similar. If it is too tight, try slightly loosening or shifting the strip to increase the drawer’s clearance.

3. Check the runners on the cabinet to make sure they are straight and properly mounted. If one side is tilted, this increases friction.

4. Lightly lubricating the runners with a dry lubricant (e.g., silicone spray) can work wonders. Do not use oil or grease, as these can damage the plastic.

5. Check the edges of the drawer for burrs, as these can rub against the runners when pulling out the drawer.

6. If the drawer is heavily loaded, the weight can also be a factor and may overload the runners.

One more question: Are the drawers originally this hard to open, or have there been modifications or different installations?

I hope this helps you for now! When adjusting, always make very small tweaks, as too much clearance can reduce stability.

Hello ELISMAU,

I would like to add to your question and explain the basics of drawer mechanics in BILLY shelves.

The stiffness usually occurs because the runners are not perfectly aligned or the sliding elements are somehow obstructed. This can also be caused by dust or small foreign particles.

A common misunderstanding is that the drawer is overloaded – the runners are designed for a specific weight capacity. It makes sense to check this.

A few explanations about adjustment:
- BILLY drawers usually have side plastic guides with teeth or small grooves, which snap into the cabinet with a type of clip or guide.
- You can often slightly adjust the tightness of the drawer by gently shifting these guides.
- However, this adjustment is usually only possible to a minimal degree.

If you feel everything is correctly assembled but the drawer is still stiff, sometimes replacing the plastic strips helps if they are worn out.

I always recommend proceeding step by step and thoroughly testing each change before continuing.

Ultimately, the material of the runners in BILLY is not a high-performance sliding system but rather designed for simple household loads.

I hope this gives you a good overview! If you have more details, feel free to share them.

Hey ELISMAU,

I also had problems with my BILLY drawers – they were stiff and sometimes quite annoying! But I managed to make them slide more smoothly! 🙂

What worked really well for me and might help you too:

- Remove all the drawers completely and take a close look at the plastic runners: I found some tiny crumbs and dust inside that were barely visible. Just wipe them clean with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Then I slightly adjusted the guide rails (like Palenar suggested): a small shift outward to reduce friction.
- Also very important: on some models, you can slightly lift the drawer from the side and reinsert it—sometimes small teeth lock in place.
- Instead of silicone spray, I used a little talcum powder on the sliding surfaces. It works great! (Just a tiny amount, or it gets too slippery).

I wanted to emphasize this as well—no grease, or it becomes sticky and attracts dirt.

Good luck adjusting! You’ll get it done! 🙂

Additional information:

The stiffness of the BILLY shelf drawers is often caused by multiple factors. As a structured approach, I recommend:

1. Check the correct installation of the drawer runners.
2. Inspect for bent or damaged parts, especially the side guides.
3. Ensure the drawers are not overloaded (observe the maximum recommended weight).
4. Clean and remove dirt particles in the runner area.
5. Adjust the side guide slightly by shifting, if possible.
6. Apply suitable dry lubricants, preferably no oil or grease.

Adjusting the drawers is not a major one-time process but should be considered as fine-tuning during regular use.

If stiffness persists despite these measures, replacing the drawer runners may be advisable. Original parts are inexpensive at IKEA and are “plug and play.”

I strongly recommend not using third-party products to ensure proper fit and function.

This hits the core: major adjustments usually worsen the quality of the guidance.
