Hello everyone, I am planning to move my BILLY wardrobe soon—both through several stairwells and using a small van. To avoid any damage to the wardrobe during transport, I am wondering what measures and preparations I can take to prevent scratches, chips, or other types of damage. Are there any proven tips, reliable packing materials, or specific techniques I should pay attention to? I am also particularly interested in advice on safely disassembling and reassembling it, if that is recommended. Thank you in advance for your helpful responses!

Hello Fatimazar, first of all, a warm welcome to the forum!

To protect your BILLY cabinet during transport, I recommend the following steps:

1. Disassembly: It is usually best to take the cabinet completely apart. This way, you can pack each piece more securely and reduce the risk of scratches.

2. Packaging: Bubble wrap or blankets work best to wrap around the individual parts. Pay special attention to cushioning the edges.

3. Securing: Use narrow boxes or straps to bundle the parts together during transport to prevent them from shifting.

4. Staircase: Try to carry the parts as upright as possible and use aids like furniture dollies if available.

I hope this helps! If you like, I can also put together a list of recommended packing materials for you.

Hello Fatimazar,

your concern is very well considered, and there are some additional steps I would like to explain to help ensure the transport of your BILLY is as damage-free as possible.

First regarding disassembly: it is advisable to take the cabinet apart into its individual components, as this not only reduces the risk of scratches from parts rubbing against each other but also increases stability during transport.

Be sure to keep screws, dowels, and small parts in labeled bags so you don’t get confused during reassembly. For packaging, I recommend the following materials:

- Bubble wrap (at least 2 layers)
- sturdy moving blankets (felt blankets)
- foam edge protectors

It is important to fully wrap the panels in the cushioning mentioned, especially at the corners where most damage usually occurs. Use tape that can be removed without leaving residue for securing the packaging.

When transporting in a vehicle, the wrapped parts should lie as flat as possible, ideally on a non-slip surface. Avoid placing panels under heavy items to prevent pressure marks.

When using stairs, it is advisable to carry the panels with at least two people and avoid tilting them, as stresses built into the wood can cause damage.

It is also worth mentioning that some commercially available transport boxes with foam inserts are an excellent solution if your budget allows.

If you need more details on tools for disassembly and assembly or recommendations for suppliers, feel free to ask!

Hello Fatimazar and everyone interested,

I would like to share a brief, structured guide on how to safely transport the BILLY cabinet. Many people make the mistake of not protecting the furniture enough or carrying it incorrectly.

1. Preparation
- Completely disassemble the cabinet, sort and label all screws.
- Check all parts for damage; this also allows you to document any minor defects before transport.

2. Packaging
- Protect the wooden panels well with foam strips on the edges.
- Bubble wrap is ideal, especially if used in multiple layers.
- Thick moving blankets prevent scratches during handling.

3. Transport
- Always carry the panels on their edges, not flat.
- Use a carrying board or furniture dolly if possible.

4. Reassembly
- Assemble the furniture in its new location to minimize the risk of damage during moving.

Common mistakes:
- Packaging parts too loosely
- Losing screws
- Carrying with only two people (better with three or four for large panels)

I hope this provides you with helpful guidance!

Fatimazar, simply disassemble everything and protect each panel individually with ceiling foil and tape. Place screws in small bags, clearly labeled. Avoid applying pressure on the surfaces while carrying. Done.
