Hello everyone,

I recently bought an Ikea Besta sideboard for my home and want to childproof the doors because my toddler is curious, and I want to prevent access to the compartments. Therefore, my question is: What practical and reliable methods or products do you recommend to childproof the doors of Ikea Besta cabinets?

I am not looking for general childproofing solutions for drawers but specifically solutions that work well with Besta doors. It is important to me that the lock is as easy to install as possible without causing permanent damage to the doors or the cabinet frame.

I would especially appreciate tips on proven magnetic locks, latch mechanisms, or alternative solutions! Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions.

I would recommend using special child safety locks with magnetic closures. These can often be installed on the inside of the doors, are invisible, and very easy for adults to operate.

Alternatively, sliding bolts mounted on the inside of the doors also work well.

Exactly! Magnetic child safety locks are great because your child can't open the doors at all, but you can still open them quickly! 👍

Someone once suggested to me to additionally pad the handles with soft protective material in case something bumps into the door. Safety comes first, so definitely keep an eye on it!

From a technical perspective, the following practical solutions are recommended to childproof Ikea Besta doors:

- Magnetic child locks: These are easy to install and concealed on the inside. They operate using a magnet integrated into the key, which releases the latch.

- Plastic clamp or latch locks mounted on the inside of the door, which mechanically prevent it from opening.

- Elastic door stoppers or rubber bands are generally unreliable and often bypass the safety mechanism.

It is important during installation to avoid causing visible damage to the furniture and to ensure usability for adults.

In the case of Besta, the doors often have a smooth surface, which can limit the adhesion of adhesive materials. Therefore, I recommend manual installation with screw fasteners, if the cabinet structure allows for it.

Be cautious with magnetic solutions: some inexpensive products have magnets that are too weak, reducing the safety.

I understand your concern well. Especially with Besta, the doors come with hinges that can be used for childproofing.

A proven solution is to install child safety latches mounted on the inside of the frame, so your child cannot open the doors from the outside. These latches are usually easy to fix with screws and can be removed if needed.

Other parents have also recommended adhesive magnetic locks, which hold well only if the surface is clean and smooth. Most adhesive locks can be removed without leaving residue, which is beneficial for renters.

If you have any specific questions about installation or product recommendations, I’m happy to help.
