ᐅ Why do the drawers in BILLY sometimes get stuck?

Hello everyone,

I have been using the Ikea Billy bookcase for several years now and am generally very satisfied. However, recently I have noticed that the drawers in some Billy models tend to stick or don’t slide smoothly from time to time. My question is: what are the possible reasons why the drawers in Billy bookcases sometimes get stuck?

I am especially interested in whether this is due to the design itself, assembly errors, material properties, or perhaps environmental factors such as humidity or temperature playing a role.

How can one prevent this issue or fix it to ensure long-term functionality?

I look forward to your insights and experiences!

Objectively, the sticking of drawers in Billy shelving units is caused by several technical factors.

First, the joints of the chipboard can expand and contract due to temperature fluctuations, which leads to stress on the drawers. Second, the accuracy of the drawer slide installation is crucial: even a slight misalignment can cause friction and binding. Third, the load capacity of the drawers should not be exceeded, as overloading negatively affects the sliding function.

To solve the problem, check the drawer slide adjustment, clean out dust and debris, and use appropriate lubricants such as PTFE spray. The shelving unit should also be placed in a room with controlled humidity to prevent warping.

Hello everyone! 🙂

I think sometimes the drawers in BILLY cabinets can be a bit tricky when the wood reacts to changes and goes through little movements.

That really sums it up, and why not give the drawers a little bit of maintenance? A bit of oil here, tightening screws there, and everything runs more smoothly.

In my experience too: frequent opening and closing works like a little wellness check for the furniture ;-)

Enjoy your BILLYs!

Exactly, that’s a nice way to think about it!

I’ve also experienced that if drawers aren’t used often enough, they can practically “rust shut.” In those cases, the only real solution is to take everything apart completely, clean it, and then gradually work it back together.

I’m a fan of that too – it significantly reduces friction without making things sticky!

And don’t underestimate the effect of cleaning the rails. Sometimes crumbs or dust are the only issue.

Installation errors are often the cause. Align the rail properly, treat it with a spray agent, and monitor the wood moisture. If necessary, sand the drawer edge.

Thank you for your detailed and varied assessments!

I felt that, in my case, a combination of wood swelling caused by moisture in the air and a slight tilt of the sliding rails on the shelf could be factors.

I will check this more thoroughly and then try cleaning them with silicone spray.

Does anyone happen to know the acceptable tolerances for installing sliding rails? How precise does the installation need to be? I imagine even a few millimeters (inches) could make a big difference.

Maybe someone here has technical data or IKEA assembly instructions that could help?

Good morning Rulifa,

Regarding your question about tolerances:

IKEA usually specifies assembly accuracy down to the millimeter – basically, the drawer slides should be installed as parallel and level as possible. A deviation of more than 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) can already cause the drawer to stick, as small inconsistencies in weight or position become more noticeable during sliding.

A small tip: use a spirit level or at least a ruler when attaching the slides; this often helps a lot.

If you notice that the wood still changes shape despite proper installation, lightly sanding the edges of the drawer can be helpful – about 0.5 mm (0.02 inches) is usually enough.

Summary:
- Install slides as plumb and parallel as possible
- Maximum 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) deviation
- If necessary, adjust drawer edges by sanding
- Regular cleaning and lubrication

Good luck with the repair!
