Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture at home. I’m not exactly sure about the surface treatment, but it is painted white and quite sensitive to water and stronger cleaning agents. My specific question is: How can I gently clean stains on the Hemnes without damaging the surface or causing dull spots? I’m particularly interested in knowing which cleaning products and methods have proven effective for removing common stains, such as coffee, grease, or ink from pens. If you also have experience caring for Hemnes furniture, I’d appreciate any tips. Thanks in advance!

Hello @declanfra, your question is very precise, I like that! 😄 The white lacquer finish on the HEMNES is really delicate – I would recommend starting with a very mild cleaner, for example, warm water with a small amount of dish soap. Important: apply gently, using a microfiber cloth for example – no scrubbing! For stubborn stains, I occasionally use a rubber-like sponge, but carefully to avoid dulling the surface.

Sometimes a mixture of water and a little vinegar helps, but not too much, as it can damage the lacquer. Always test first in an inconspicuous area! In other words: better to be gentle and patient than aggressive and risky. Hope this helps!

I’ll add some technical details, as the sensitivity of the HEMNES furniture to stain cleaning depends on the specific surface finish. The white HEMNES is usually sealed with a polyurethane lacquer, which offers some resistance to water and diluted cleaners but should be protected from fine scratches and dulling.

The best approach is as follows:
- First, wipe the surface with a soft, damp microfiber cloth to remove dust and loose particles.
- For everyday stains, use lukewarm water with a few drops of a neutral dish soap, applied with gentle pressure.
- For tougher stains, a plastic eraser without abrasive particles can be used carefully. However, work very gently to avoid roughening the lacquer.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or aggressive chemicals (acetone, alcohol, ammonia) that can damage the lacquer.
- Treat stains as soon as possible, as drying and absorption make removal more difficult.

One more question for you: What kind of stains do you have on the furniture exactly? That way, a more targeted approach can be suggested.

Thanks for the tips! Regarding your question, Dilen: the most common stains are coffee and grease, occasionally ballpoint pen or ink (my little son was creative). Coffee and grease are usually surface stains, but I’m worried about removal methods that might be too strong for ballpoint pen marks. Most recently, I tried using alcohol on ink stains, but it made the finish somewhat dull, which probably wasn’t a good idea. That’s why I’m currently looking for gentler solutions specifically for ink stains that won’t damage the finish.

For the targeted removal of ink stains on a coated HEMNES surface, a careful approach with minimal chemical exposure is recommended. The professional procedure is:

- Use distilled water and a soft cloth, rubbing damp (not wet) and checking the result.
- For ink, a slightly moistened cotton swab with isopropanol (about 70%), applied only locally and with minimal contact, is suitable to avoid drying out or lightly roughening the surface.
- Immediately wipe the treated area with clean water and dry it.

Alcohol quickly dulls the finish because it dissolves the polyurethane coating. Therefore, alcohol-based cleaners should be used sparingly and only on small areas.

Important: Test each method in an inconspicuous spot. Do not let the stain dry out, and allow treated areas to dry promptly to avoid water marks or dull spots.

Coffee and grease stains are best removed with warm water and dish soap.

Carefully remove ballpoint pen marks using an eraser, but avoid rubbing too hard.
