Hello everyone, I am considering customizing my Ikea Besta shelving unit with wooden trim and decorative elements to make it more visually appealing and unique. I am particularly interested in how to attach wooden trim without damaging the surface of the shelving unit, and what kinds of decoration work well without looking too cluttered. Does anyone have experience with styling the look using wooden trim in a tasteful way that doesn’t compromise functionality? It would also be helpful to know which simple techniques or tools are needed to carry out these modifications on your own. I look forward to any tips, instructions, or inspiring ideas on how to transform the Besta with minimal effort.

You can easily attach wooden strips using double-sided mounting tape. This way, the surface remains undamaged. For decoration, I recommend subtle colors or metallic accents. This makes the shelf look elegant without appearing cluttered.

Hello! I really like your idea of enhancing the Besta with wooden strips and decorations. Before attaching the strips, make sure the surface is clean and dry. Sandpaper is only useful if you plan to firmly screw in the strips or apply paint, but keep in mind that painting may alter the surface appearance. Many people use specially cut wooden strips made of pine or oak, which they either paint or leave natural. For fixing the strips, I recommend very thin screws that are hardly visible or construction adhesive if the strips are purely decorative. As decoration, small metal brackets, patina effects, or even plant holders work well – they make the shelf more lively without being too intrusive. Just make sure the strips fit flush and do not break or splinter. Do you have an idea whether your shelf should have a modern, Scandinavian, or rustic look?

Interesting question. However, I wonder if attaching wooden strips to Ikea Besta might be somewhat challenging due to the material properties. The laminated wood is not entirely solid, and screws often do not hold well without pre-drilling and using anchors. Additionally, attaching the strips could affect the stable structure if not done carefully.

That is certainly true, but I would still prefer to look for alternatives to screwing, such as strips with grooves that can be clipped or snapped on. Are there any experiences with this?

Also: What kinds of decoration do you mean exactly? Because too much decoration can quickly look cheap – less is often more in this case.

Thank you for your initial feedback! I’m leaning toward a modern and clean style, possibly with some warm wooden accents to complement the white Besta. The idea of using mounting tape sounds practical, but I’m doubtful whether the trims will hold securely, especially if something leans against them. I’d prefer to avoid screws for aesthetic reasons or use them as discreetly as possible. Alternatively, I’ve considered thin wooden trims fixed with small angle brackets; does anyone have experience with the durability of this method?

For decoration, I’m thinking of simple elements like small plant pots, possibly matching LED strips, or minimalist hooks for keys or small items. I’d be interested to hear if anyone has added such extras to a Besta and how they perform in daily use. Also, any tips on the best way to varnish or treat the wooden trims to ensure they last?

Hello, I have been working intensively on furniture modifications for several years, including Ikea Besta. To answer your questions as precisely as possible, here are some details:

- Wood strips: The best method is to cut the strips with millimeter accuracy, ideally from sturdy hardwood like oak or beech. All edges should be finely sanded, and the strips treated with a water-based clear varnish or a matte oil that enhances the wood grain without making it too shiny. Too much varnish takes away the wood’s natural authenticity.

- Attachment: If you want to avoid screws, a strong, high-quality mounting tape specifically designed for wood/plastic works well. Alternatively, small metal starter profiles can be fixed inside the shelf to clamp the strips in place. Make sure the shelf door or drawer is not obstructed. Pre-drilling the strips is essential to prevent splitting.

- Decoration: Minimalist LED strips with warm white light look very harmonious, especially when recessed into a small groove in the wood strip. For plants, I find small succulents or air plants in hanging containers ideal – they require little care and enhance the overall look. Small, simple hooks and metal accents (bronze, black) create nice contrasts with the wood.

- Tools: A proper miter box or a mitre saw is essential for precise cuts, as is sandpaper with a grit between 120 and 220. A small cordless drill and fine drill bits (1.5–2 mm) are helpful if you use screws.

I would recommend testing the finish, varnish, and attachment on a small sample strip before applying everything on a larger scale. Do you have a sketch or moodboard for the design?
