Hello everyone,

I am planning to convert my IKEA KALLAX shelf into a bar and want to put it on casters to make it more flexible in the room. At the same time, I am aware that the weight and the slightly elevated position of the bottles could potentially cause tipping hazards.

I am particularly interested in whether anyone has experience using the KALLAX on casters as a bar? Have you encountered stability issues, especially when placing heavier items on top or when considering the rolling function? Are there any design tips on how to reduce the risk of tipping without limiting its practical use?

I look forward to hearing your experiences, preferably with details about the type of casters, mounting methods, or additional reinforcements.

Best regards!

Hello Trapra,

First of all, thank you for your very precise question! About a year ago, I converted a KALLAX into a rolling bar, so I would like to share my experience with you.

1. Stability: The risk of tipping actually increases when heavy bottles or glassware are stored on top and the shelf is placed on wheels. The original KALLAX is quite sturdy, but the wheels significantly reduce its basic stability.

2. Choice of wheels: Wide, rubberized casters with locking brakes work best. Small or rigid wheels can quickly cause a shaky movement.

3. Widening: I stabilized the KALLAX by adding small feet or angle brackets to the lower frame to widen the base support. This works wonders against tipping.

4. Weight distribution: I store heavy bottles in the lower section and lighter glassware on top. This is very important for a rolling bar.

5. Fixing: If you move the bar, do so slowly and carefully – always keep the brakes locked when using it.

My conclusion: KALLAX on wheels is feasible, but only with proper reinforcements and careful use.

Good luck with your project!

I can confirm that from personal experience. I also wanted to make my KALLAX bar mobile. At first, I was quite excited about the idea of being flexible, but after moving it a few times, I quickly realized that even when using casters with locking brakes, the balance often feels unstable – especially if you move it too quickly or accidentally lean something next to the bar.

It does feel a bit unsafe, especially when guests are around. I then tried to use fixed feet in critical situations and only install the casters during setup or when rearranging.

I appreciate that fugolo points out the importance of weight distribution – that’s really a key factor. Not least for the safety of all the glasses and bottles.

What about the materials? KALLAX is basically a lightweight, pressed wood fiber. Has anyone ever thought about combining it with metal reinforcements?

Hello everyone,

Really interesting discussion here! I’d like to jump in briefly, as I’m already using a KALLAX on casters as a mobile storage unit—not a bar, but heavy books and files. So I’m very familiar with the issue of tipping hazards.

Regarding tipping hazards: a caster with a locking brake is a must. I’ve also reinforced the lower base panels with additional metal brackets, which makes the KALLAX significantly more stable. This also helps prevent the major tipping risk when pushing or parking it.

Additionally, I once considered attaching some kind of bracket or stopper to the back, which can be fixed to the wall or floor when the unit is stationary. This completely minimizes the risk of unintended movement.

The KALLAX material itself is not designed for heavy loads, so I would advise against placing very heavy items on top, especially when it’s on casters.

In summary: depending on the load and use, I would consider internal reinforcement (e.g., additional cross braces). Also, choosing quality casters carefully is crucial.

Best regards!

Hey Trapra,

I really like the idea! 🙂 I also have my KALLAX bar on casters, mostly just for fun. I haven’t really had any tipping issues so far – what I did was mount the casters not at the very bottom but close to the outer edge, so the unit doesn’t tip over easily when moving it.

Also, it usually stays in place rather than rolling around all the time. When I do move it, I use a small push bar so I don’t accidentally nudge any bottles or upset the balance.

What helped me as well: I don’t fully load the top shelf (just decorations and a few light glasses), heavier items stay in the lower compartments.

But honestly, a bar on casters is fun because you can move it flexibly. There is a slight tipping sensation, but to me that makes it feel lively – you just have to be careful 🙂 Good luck with your modification!
