arashlo5024 Jan 2017 18:37Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling several Ikea METOD wall cabinets and mounting them upright on the wall. My main focus is on achieving a more efficient, secure, and as time-saving as possible installation—without compromising stability. Specifically:
- Which steps in the installation process can I optimize to speed it up?
- Are there any special tools or aids that make aligning and securing the cabinets easier?
- What is the best approach if the wall is not perfectly straight or structurally sound?
- I am also interested in which mounting and fixing methods have proven particularly effective, especially when installing multiple wall cabinets side by side.
I have already read the assembly instructions but am looking for practical tips and tricks to avoid mistakes and reduce effort. Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Regarding your topic “Ikea METOD: How can I optimize the installation of wall cabinets?” I can provide some detailed advice based on my experience and technical knowledge:
1. Preparation & Tools
- Use a laser level or at least a high-quality spirit level to ensure precise alignment.
- A cordless drill/driver with torque control is essential for driving screws consistently without damaging the material.
2. Assembly Aids
- It’s helpful to use supports or temporary braces (e.g., small blocks or adjustable props) to hold the cabinets in place during mounting.
- Make sure the metal mounting rails of METOD are installed cleanly and completely, as they significantly affect stability.
3. Wall Condition
- If the wall surface is uneven, using spacer blocks or special shims can help achieve a flush alignment of the cabinets.
- For load-bearing walls, always use appropriate anchors, such as heavy-duty anchors or metal expansion anchors, depending on the wall material. For drywall/plasterboard walls, toggle anchors are recommended.
4. Installing Cabinets in a Row
- First, mount the rails on the wall perfectly level, then hang the cabinets on them.
- Afterwards, connect the cabinets to each other using the supplied connector fittings to create a stable unit.
I recommend working especially carefully on the first cabinet to establish an accurate reference for all the others.
One more question for you: What kind of wall surface are you working with exactly? Stone, concrete, drywall? This greatly influences the choice of anchors and mounting method.
Best regards,
Fabian

A cordless drill driver with adjustable torque is essential for driving screws consistentlyThat might be true, but I think many people overestimate all the high-tech equipment. With a bit of feel and a regular screwdriver, it can be done as well. Sure, it takes a little longer, but if you really want to know how everything fits, you shouldn’t prioritize convenience over proper assembly.
Also, I wonder if it’s really necessary to be so precise down to the millimeter when assembling IKEA cabinets. As long as the cabinets hang straight and the doors close properly, isn’t that the main goal?
My theory: Most people exaggerate and just maintain the illusion of “perfection,” which often leads to laser-level obsessions and an excessive tool addiction. Fortunately, METOD cabinet models are usually quite sturdy and even allow slight adjustments after hanging.
Of course, tips are helpful, but sometimes less is more. Just something to think about.

Certainly, with wall cabinets, every tenth of a millimeter is not critical, but when you have several cabinets side by side, small irregularities quickly add up to an annoyance, especially visually. Over several meters, you can’t just say, "it doesn’t matter."
Regarding saving energy and time: Using a laser or similar aids is initially more time-consuming due to preparation but ultimately saves rework, adjustments, and thus unnecessary frustration.
On the topic of mounting on non-load-bearing walls:
- It’s really important, especially for drywall, to choose anchors that match the load of the cabinets.
- Especially if you plan many wall cabinets next to each other, I recommend stronger anchoring to load-bearing walls or ceilings where possible.
Good planning and precise work often prevent damage and repair effort, which should not be underestimated.
How much experience do you have so far with the tools and installation in general, arashlo50? That way we could tailor the advice better.

One more question for you: What kind of surface are you dealing with exactly? Stone, concrete, drywall? This significantly affects the choice of anchors and installation method. That’s an important point – in my case, it’s a combination: part of the wall cabinets will hang on a load-bearing concrete wall, while the other part will be mounted on a drywall partition.
Therefore, I am focusing on the right type of anchors and fastening methods for both surfaces, aiming to choose very reliable solutions for each. The concrete wall is of course simpler, but I’m uncertain about how many anchors per cabinet are recommended as a minimum on the drywall side, especially under maximum load.
So far, I have some experience using cordless drills, spirit levels, etc., but no large furniture projects of this scale yet.
My goal is to complete the project with as little rework and complaints as possible – therefore I really appreciate the detailed and well-structured answers. I would be grateful for any additional tips, particularly regarding fixing on drywall and cabinet fastening.
