Hello everyone,
A few months ago, I bought several IKEA Malm furniture pieces (mainly dressers and nightstands) and now I would like to know which maintenance products are best for long-term care to avoid damaging or discoloring the material.
Specifically, I am concerned about the surfaces, which are made of laminated engineered wood, and I want to prevent moisture or overly aggressive cleaners from damaging the finish. It would be great if someone with experience could share which cleaning or care products (e.g., special furniture care products, microfiber cloths, natural alternatives, etc.) are suitable and which ones should definitely be avoided.
I’m also interested in tips for regular maintenance: how often to clean, how to deal with fingerprints or minor scratches.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

I completely understand your concern, as I faced the same issue and was unsure which products I could use on my Malm furniture.
I can totally relate to that. In my experience, the laminated surface is quite durable but sensitive to harsh cleaners or abrasive sponges. I usually use only slightly damp microfiber cloths and occasionally water-based furniture care products that are specifically recommended for laminate or plastic surfaces.
If you treat the furniture carefully and avoid cleaning it too often with excessive moisture, the surface will stay nice for a long time. I have also sometimes concealed small scratches with a furniture touch-up pen.
How do you currently handle this? Maybe we can share tips with each other.

For the proper care of IKEA Malm furniture, please note the following:
The furniture is generally made of particleboard with a foil coating. This coating is sensitive to solvents, harsh cleaning agents, and excessive moisture.
- It is recommended to use only mild cleaning products that are pH-neutral or specifically designed for plastic surfaces.
- Use water sparingly. Always thoroughly dry the surface after cleaning.
- Microfiber cloths are ideal as they clean gently without scratching the surface.
- Wax-based furniture polish is not recommended, as it can dissolve or discolor the foil surface.
- For scratches, repair markers (e.g., for laminate or furniture) are usually suitable and can significantly improve the appearance.
In general, avoid aggressive cleaners such as ammonia or alcohol-based substances. Abrasive cleaners should also be avoided.
I hope this helps with proper maintenance.

No strong cleaning agents, no waxes. That matches my experience. I specifically tested waxes and noticed they tend to leave a sticky film that attracts dust.
SONBI, have you tried anything and would like to share your experience? 🙂
Regarding the frequency of cleaning: For me, wiping dust weekly with a dry microfiber cloth is sufficient. If stains or fingerprints are visible, clean them immediately with a slightly dampened cloth.
This supports the advice that wax products are generally intended for solid wood and are not suitable for foil finishes.
For stain removal: Do not use solvents such as turpentine or alcohol. Water with a small amount of denatured alcohol is possible but should be used sparingly and carefully.
