riguluRecently, I have several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces at home, especially dressers and nightstands. I’ve noticed that when using them, particularly when opening and closing the drawers, they often sound quite loud and rattly. This is especially disturbing at night when everything else is quiet. Are there effective ways or tips to reduce the noise of Hemnes furniture? I’m thinking of simple measures like adjusting the fittings, using a special lubricant, or maybe replacing certain parts. Perhaps someone else has had similar experiences and can share their solutions. Thanks in advance!
To reduce noise from IKEA Hemnes furniture, focus primarily on the mechanical details:
- Check the drawer slides: Metal runners are often not properly lubricated, causing noise. Using an appropriate lubricant such as silicone oil or dry PTFE spray significantly reduces friction and squeaking sounds.
- Screws and joints: Make sure all screws and dowels are tight. Even slight looseness can lead to unwanted vibrations and noise.
- Felt pads or damping strips: Placed under the furniture or between the drawers and the carcass, these materials can absorb unwanted shocks.
- Plastic tape strips between moving wooden parts reduce wood-on-wood squeaking noises.
Replacing parts is usually straightforward due to Hemnes’ modular design but should only be done selectively if other measures have no effect.

Plastic tape strips between moving wooden parts reduce wood-on-wood squeaking sounds. These little tricks helped me a lot as well. It’s really annoying when every sound in the apartment seems especially loud in the evening. I just wanted to add that I also used small felt pads on the contact points of the doors – that dampens the noise significantly.
It’s really worth taking some time to work through these spots systematically. Sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming with all the screws and parts, but it’s worth the effort. How do you handle this with multiple pieces of furniture? Do you have a specific order in which you check drawers and doors?
