DubuneHello everyone, I am planning a kitchen island using the IKEA Metod system and want to equip it with ample storage space as well as an integrated seating area. My idea is for the island to be used for cooking and food preparation, but also to serve as a small dining spot for two to three people. I am particularly unsure which Metod modules are best suited for this and how to best incorporate a bench or stools into the island without compromising storage functionality. Does anyone have experience or tips on the best approach for planning this? I am especially interested in advice on color combinations, storage optimization, and practical installation tips specifically for a kitchen island with seating.
Hey, great idea with the kitchen island! 😄 I built a Metod island myself and can say that the combination of storage and seating works really well – if planned smartly. It’s important to choose storage cabinets that aren’t too deep, so there’s still enough legroom under the bench seat.
Regarding color combinations: I went for dark fronts with light countertops, which creates a nice contrast. Installation tips: Make sure the countertop has enough overhang at the back to serve as the seating surface – that way you can easily tuck stools or benches underneath. For storage, pull-out drawers are super practical because they allow easy access even to deep items. Good luck with your build!

For the structural and functional planning of a kitchen island with the Ikea Metod system, I recommend systematically considering the following points:
- Modular selection: Choose standardized Metod base cabinets with either 60 cm (24 inches) or 40 cm (16 inches) depth, as these typically offer optimal ergonomics.
- Seating area: For a bench seating, allow at least 60 cm (24 inches) of clearance between the base cabinet and the seating surface to ensure sufficient legroom.
- Storage space: Deep drawers provide better access to utensils than shelves.
- Worktop: Select a sturdy, preferably overhanging worktop that allows comfortable seating.
For storage, Metod cabinets with drawers, such as the Bohult fronts, are suitable because they are robust. For the seating area, it is advisable to use standard worktops plus additional support profiles to ensure stability.

Matthewt4813 Nov 2023 10:03Hello, I would like to add that when integrating a seating area into the kitchen island, it is important to carefully consider the spot where people will sit.
A good tip is to equip the seating surface with a cushion or at least rounded edges to increase comfort. If you want to use stools, they should ideally be easy to slide in and out without colliding with the cabinet drawers.
It also makes sense to position the island so that it fits the main traffic routes in the kitchen to avoid creating bottlenecks. For storage planning, it helps to place frequently used kitchen utensils in the upper cabinets or easily accessible drawers, while less frequently used items can be stored in the lower sections.

Hey everyone! I’ve been following this topic with great interest and wanted to share a casual tip. 😎 The seating doesn’t have to be permanently fixed! You can use really cool bar stools next to the island that can easily be rolled away when needed. This saves space and is super flexible.
Also, if you combine the fronts of the Metod cabinets creatively – for example, sustainable wood-look with white surfaces – the island immediately looks much more stylish and authentic.
Regarding storage: a little trick – inner drawers or organizers inside the pull-outs really help keep everything tidy and prevent items from sliding around. And don’t forget, open shelves can also offer space for cookbooks or decorations.
Super important, otherwise it can get uncomfortable after a while. Have fun building, this is going to be really cool!
