janonHello everyone,
I am considering customizing the color of some of my IKEA Brimnes furniture pieces to better match my apartment’s interior. My specific question is: Is it possible to personalize IKEA Brimnes furniture with paint, and if so, which methods work best without affecting the functionality or stability of the furniture? I am particularly interested in whether the surfaces can be easily painted, or if other techniques like applying vinyl wraps or adhesive films are practical. It would also be helpful to know if there are any special characteristics of the materials that should be considered when adjusting the color. I look forward to your experience and tips!

Hello janon,
I think your question is very well formulated because you address different methods right away. Basically, the Brimnes furniture from IKEA is usually made of coated particleboard, which has both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to changing the color.
- Painting is generally possible but requires thorough surface preparation, meaning sanding and possibly a primer, since the melamine coating is very smooth.
- Vinyl or self-adhesive films can be applied easily; however, their durability is often limited, and they may peel off at edges or corners.
- When covering with paper or fabric, caution is needed because the surface is usually not very absorbent and strong adhesives are required.
It is also important that no strong sources of moisture are present during application, as the particleboard could swell if exposed to high humidity.
If you like, I can explain the individual steps for painting or applying film in more detail.

A brief answer upfront: Yes, IKEA Brimnes furniture can be customized in color, but it should be treated with the correct technique.
The furniture surface is rather smooth, not solid wood – which means:
- Painting directly without preparation results in poor adhesion.
- Sanding with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 220) improves the surface texture for the paint.
- Afterwards, I strongly recommend a primer suitable for melamine.
If you don’t want to paint, you can achieve good results with matte or glossy adhesive film, which are also reversible. However, you should ensure precise cutting and a bubble-free application.
Also, make sure that the furniture design, including the base and fronts, allows for wrapping – some edges are more difficult to cover with film.

As additional information: The Brimnes series from IKEA uses particleboard and MDF components coated with melamine resin, which provides high abrasion resistance. This makes the surface very smooth and with low absorbency.
Because of this:
- Painting must be done with a suitable primer designed for melamine-coated surfaces to prevent chipping and poor adhesion.
- Sanding is challenging; sanding too aggressively can damage the surface, while insufficient sanding leads to adhesion problems.
- Alternative methods: High-quality self-adhesive films with good edge adhesion are practical solutions, but precise application is essential for durable results.
Additionally, when painting, allow the furniture enough drying time and ensure good ventilation. Simple powder coating is not possible here, as the furniture is industrially pre-coated.

Are there any special types of films that adhere better or particular techniques to increase durability? It would also be important for me that the furniture can be restored to its original condition without much effort if needed.
I also have a second question: Some Brimnes furniture pieces have small plastic surfaces, for example on drawer handles or covers. Is it possible to adjust the color there effectively, or would painting or replacing be generally discouraged? Thanks in advance!
Hey janon 😊
Regarding the films: Yes, there are special cast films that are more flexible and durable than the cheaper standard vinyl films like Oracal. They adhere better to corners and edges and are easier to work with because they can stretch.
About your idea of reversibility: film is really great for that since you can remove it later without leaving any traces – of course, if done correctly.
For the plastic parts, in your case, I would rather use special plastic sprays or even automotive paints. They adhere better and remain flexible, which is important because plastic tends to peel the paint off quickly.
Some people also simply replace the handles, as there are replacement parts available at stores like IKEA or from third-party suppliers. That instantly changes the look and can sometimes be easier than painting.
Good luck, and don’t be afraid of paint – it’s fun!
