Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Malm dressers: several of the drawer handles have simply come off or broken. The handles are made of plastic and have a very simple design, which I suspect contributes to the breakage.

My question is: What can I do if Malm drawer handles break?

I am interested in practical solutions, especially how to either repair or replace the handles without having to replace the entire dresser. Are there alternative handles that fit well? Or any specific adhesive or fastening methods that are particularly sturdy?

Thanks in advance for useful tips and experiences!

Hi, if the handles break, you can simply reorder them directly from IKEA.

Alternatively, you can attach the handles using a stronger adhesive or use small metal screws if the plastic fasteners don’t hold.

Some people also screw on handles from third-party manufacturers, as long as the hole spacing fits.

Hello Svenfu,

I’m happy to provide a more detailed explanation on how to handle broken MALM drawer handles.

1. Check the cause: Handles often break because the mounting holes have worn out or the plastic has become brittle. If the hole is too large, the handle won’t sit properly anymore.

2. Original replacement parts: IKEA usually offers the handles separately for purchase. These can be easily replaced if the mounting holes are still intact.

3. Repair options: If the holes are damaged, you can fill them with small wooden or plastic dowels and then drill new holes.

4. Alternative handles: There are compatible handles from third-party suppliers, often made of metal and more durable. Make sure to check the hole spacing (standard is 128 mm [5 inches] for MALM).

5. Gluing or screwing methods: For broken plastic pieces, superglue can help—but only if parts are partially broken and not completely missing. Screws provide the best hold, but you need the correct length to avoid damaging the wood.

In summary: First check the mounting holes, order original handles if needed, otherwise you can use simple repair methods or upgrade with sturdier handles from third-party manufacturers.

I completely agree with that.

MALM handles are inexpensive but neither attractive nor durable. If the plastic handle breaks, I would rather consider switching directly to metal ones—they look much better and last forever.

Exactly, and if the mounting holes are really damaged: use washers or larger screws for better hold. With these budget furniture pieces, you often have to improvise a bit when the parts don’t last very long.

In short: Buying replacement original handles is possible but often more expensive and less durable. Insider tip: install handles from hardware stores with the same measurements—you’ll get something more stable and nicer-looking.
