Hello everyone,

I am looking for a way to clean my IKEA Malm furniture made of particleboard very gently. Since the surface is melamine-coated, I know that aggressive cleaning agents or excessive moisture can cause damage.

I am particularly interested in which methods or products you would recommend for removing both dust and stubborn stains without harming or dulling the coating.

Are there any special cleaning additives or home remedies that have proven effective? Or is it better to just use water soaked in a microfiber cloth? I want to keep my furniture looking well-maintained for as long as possible.

Thank you in advance for any reliable advice!

Cleaning Malm furniture made of particleboard with a melamine surface should always be done using as little water as possible, as swollen particleboard can lead to warping.

For regular cleaning, a dry microfiber cloth is recommended to remove dust. For heavier dirt, a slightly damp cloth with warm water and a few drops of a mild dishwashing detergent can be used. It is important to immediately wipe the furniture dry with a clean cloth afterwards.

Avoid using abrasive or harsh cleaning agents as well as alcohol-based cleaners, as these can damage the surface and cause it to become dull.

In addition to hauklo, I would like to add that for stains like grease or light adhesive residues, a special plastic cleaner or a mild dish soap dissolved in water can be used.

This is important because melamine coatings are chemically sensitive.

Home remedies such as vinegar or citric acid are not recommended, as they can damage the coating. If you are unsure, always test cleaning agents on an inconspicuous area first.

I think this topic is very important because many people, myself included, often over-rotate and end up damaging the furniture. I used to try removing stains with abrasive cream cleaner – that backfired, leaving the surface dull and unattractive.

What helped me was using a soft cloth with warm water and just a tiny bit of dish soap, wiping gently and drying immediately. Sometimes simply using a damp microfiber cloth without any additives already makes a big difference. It’s best to avoid harsh cleaners altogether.

I’m also curious if there are professional products specifically designed for malm furniture? Unfortunately, I haven’t found any good recommendations yet.

Simply wipe with a damp cloth, do not use aggressive cleaners. Avoid abrasive agents. Wipe dry immediately.

Hello sinanmeo,

I understand that you want to preserve your Malm furniture. Unfortunately, particleboard with a melamine coating is very sensitive to moisture and aggressive cleaning agents.

For gentle cleaning, I recommend the following approach: first, remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth. For stains, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent, apply it sparingly, and immediately wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth.

If there are adhesive residues or more stubborn stains, sometimes a soft eraser can help when used carefully.

For maintenance, I do not recommend oils or waxes, as they do not absorb into the surface. Occasionally, a furniture care wipe designed for plastic surfaces can be used.

I hope this helps you!
