leland36Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago, I started using our IKEA Hemnes furniture in the children’s room, especially dressers and wardrobes. Since we have a toddler at home, I am very concerned about making the IKEA Hemnes furniture childproof.
I am mainly focused on preventing accidents caused by furniture tipping over, securely locking drawers and doors, and generally ensuring surfaces and edges are as safe as possible.
Does anyone have experience with suitable safety devices, locks, or modification options specifically designed for the Hemnes series?
I look forward to your feedback and advice!

Hey leland36,
I totally understand your concern – safety always comes first with kids! 😅 I have Hemnes dressers at home too and have used a few tricks:
- Definitely secure the furniture to the wall to prevent tipping, that’s the most important step! IKEA even offers special brackets for this.
- I used child safety locks for the doors and drawers; they’re easy to install and stop little hands from opening them.
- For the corners: clear silicone corner protectors are great so the look doesn’t suffer.
It sounds like a lot, but it’s actually pretty quick to do and will save you a lot of worry! 🍀
Good luck with securing everything!

I want to provide a bit more detail about securing the Hemnes furniture, since it’s made of wood and relatively heavy:
- Wall anchoring is definitely necessary. The Hemnes series isn’t very stable against tipping, especially for cabinets with many drawers.
- For doors, you can use magnetic child locks or pinch-style locks, which often can be installed without drilling.
- Drawer locks are a bit trickier because Hemnes drawers often have strong metal runners. There are special models that you can install with some DIY skills.
- Softer edge protectors help reduce the risk of injury from bumps.
When installing, always consider child-friendly operation: your locks should be hard for children to open but easy for you to handle.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Great topic, I really like that you’re focusing on this! 😍
I also secured the furniture to the wall on our Hemnes desk, it’s very reassuring to know nothing can tip over!
They’re really worth their weight in gold; for us, it was a good investment.
Another tip: use transparent drawer stoppers that prevent drawers from being pulled out completely. This reduces the risk of a child pulling them down or getting caught.
If you combine that with edge protectors for furniture, you get good all-around protection.
Good luck with securing everything!

Hello,
In our kids’ room, we installed special furniture locks on the Hemnes dressers. They are not visible and can be opened with a small button. This reliably prevents the little ones from pulling everything out.
Also helpful: adding locks to shelves if you still have open storage.
That’s right, these three points were absolutely the basics for us as well.
I would say: it’s better to invest a bit more to ensure greater safety.
