Hello everyone, I have several Billy shelves from Ikea that I would like to set up without attaching them to the wall due to space constraints. Unfortunately, the shelves wobble a bit, which concerns me since there are children in the household and I want to avoid any hazards. I am therefore looking for ways to increase the stability of the Billy shelves without having to screw them to the wall. Has anyone had experience with such alternatives? I specifically mean no wall attachments, but rather measures to improve the stand or stabilize the construction. I would appreciate any tips, tricks, or material suggestions that don’t require major modifications. Thanks in advance!

It is best to use sturdy floor clamp plates at the bottom to secure the shelves to the floor. Alternatively, attach small non-slip rubber pads under the feet. Both methods provide stability.

Exactly, and to make it even safer, you can also place weights in the lower compartments – a bit of sand or heavy books basically puts the shelf on standby mode 😄.

Non-slip and still gentle on the floor – a simple trick that is often underestimated. This significantly reduces wobbling.

Hello Benlaure52,

I think your question is very well formulated, and the topic is quite important—especially in households with children. To make the shelves stable without wall mounting, you can use, in addition to the rubber pads already mentioned, corner brackets to connect multiple Billy shelves. Even if wall mounting is not possible, connecting several units helps prevent tipping.

Another option is to use self-adhesive anti-slip material between the shelf and the floor. If your floor is uneven, a small pad can also improve stability.

Some users also report using so-called furniture stoppers, which are attached to the outside of the shelf and provide a secure stand.

If you like, I can also recommend a few sources for these materials.

I have to disagree a bit here. Connecting several shelves doesn’t help much if each individual shelf isn’t properly leveled. I think people often overlook how important the floor’s condition is. If the floor isn’t completely even, any shelf will tip over, no matter how much you try to link them together.

My advice: it’s better to use a wooden wedge or homemade shims to make sure the shelf stands perfectly straight. After that, you can secure the connected shelves together with screws, which will really stabilize them without necessarily needing wall attachments.

And honestly: to me, refusing to screw the shelf to the wall sounds more like stubbornness. The safest option is always anchoring it to the wall; everything else is just a compromise with risks.
