Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the setup of my guest room and want to mainly use IKEA Brimnes furniture, specifically the Brimnes wardrobe, the bed with drawers, and the matching bedside table. My challenge is to optimally arrange the room so that everything fits well together, there is enough storage space, and the room does not feel cramped.

The room is approximately 3.5 x 4 meters (11.5 x 13 feet) in size, with the door located on the shorter wall and the windows on the opposite longer wall.

I am particularly interested in how to proceed in order to perfectly match the dimensions and functions of the furniture to the room. Are there any special considerations for the Brimnes wardrobe body, such as door swings, drawer clearance, or height, that I should keep in mind during planning? Also, it would be helpful to learn how to use the storage space effectively without overwhelming the room.

I look forward to well-founded tips on room planning with this furniture, and possibly recommendations for useful tools or methods that have proven effective. Thanks in advance!

Hello Floni50,

For planning with IKEA Brimnes furniture, I recommend the following steps:

- Precise room measurements: accurately record doors, windows, radiators, and electrical outlets.
- Check furniture dimensions carefully: for example, the Brimnes wardrobe is 190 cm (75 inches) high, 120 cm (47 inches) wide, and 54 cm (21 inches) deep. The drawers under the bed take up about 20 cm (8 inches) of vertical space.
- Allow sufficient clearance for movement: 60–80 cm (24–31 inches) in front of wardrobes or drawers is advisable.
- Check door and drawer swing ranges and, if necessary, position furniture so they can open freely.

Even though the Brimnes carcass appears sturdy, pay special attention to wall clearances to avoid blocking the drawers.

IKEA planning tools work well for space planning, but traditional methods like a scaled floor plan on graph paper with millimeter (inch) precision are very reliable. It is important to test different furniture arrangements beforehand to maximize storage and avoid making the room feel cluttered.

In summary: take measurements, allow clearance for movement, and calculate door and drawer swings.

Hello Floni50,

I would like to add the following:

- Brimnes furniture is known for its solid storage functionality, but the pieces are relatively deep (wardrobes about 54 cm deep (21 inches)). You should consider this when positioning them against walls to allow enough space for walking around.
- For doors and drawers, it is advisable to mark the maximum area of opened drawers or cabinet doors on the floor using masking tape. This is the best way to determine how much free space is actually needed.
- Store heavy or infrequently used items in the lower drawers to maintain ease of use.
- If possible, you can also experiment with mirrors to visually enlarge rooms if the area feels tight.

Regarding tools: IKEA offers an online room planner that specifically shows the assembly and dimensions for Brimnes and other furniture. For very precise planning, software like SketchUp is also recommended if you are familiar with it.

Good luck with your project!

This is an important point. Without enough space to open them, the furniture quickly becomes impractical.

I would recommend placing the bed along the wall with the windows, so there is more free space for the wardrobe on the opposite wall.

Good morning,

here is a structured approach for your planning with Brimnes:

1. Measure the room and fix points: note doors, windows, radiators, electrical outlets (these often limit furniture placement).

2. Know the furniture dimensions:
- Brimnes wardrobe: 120 x 54 x 190 cm (47 x 21 x 75 inches)
- Brimnes bed with drawers usually about 140 x 200 cm (55 x 79 inches), plus approximately 20 cm (8 inches) drawer height
- Nightstand: typically around 40 x 35 x 50 cm (16 x 14 x 20 inches)

3. Practical considerations:
- Drawers require clearance to open. At least 90 cm (35 inches) of free space in front is recommended.
- Position the bed so you can access the drawers from both sides to maximize usability.

4. Room appearance:
- Light colors and minimal decoration make a small room feel more spacious.

5. If possible, order a sample or test assemble at home.

6. Tools: Use a drawing program or the IKEA planner to try out different layouts.

Summary: First, clarify the exact measurements and movement zones, then arrange furniture accordingly. Brimnes works well if doors and drawer access paths are not blocked.

That’s a good point I would like to add: besides mirrors, clever lighting and room dividers can help make better use of the room’s volume without reducing the amount of furniture.

Regarding Brimnes: the height of 190 cm (6 ft 3 in) for the wardrobe is comfortable, but it’s advisable to leave a small gap to the ceiling to allow air circulation and avoid installation errors.

If you still feel unsure about the placement, a temporary cardboard outline of the furniture dimensions in the room can help – this creates a better sense of space and proportions.
