benthermo619 Jul 2020 08:37Hello everyone, I currently have a problem with squeaking Billy cabinet doors from Ikea, and I am looking for a way to eliminate this noise permanently without damaging the construction or having to take the doors apart too much.
The sounds mostly occur when opening or closing the doors and seem to come from the hinge mechanism or the tracks. I suspect that friction between metal and wood or metal on metal might be involved.
I have already considered using lubricants but am unsure which type is best—oils, silicone spray, or a solid grease? I am also wondering if it makes sense to slightly adjust the doors or if it is possible to make mechanical adjustments to the hinges that can prevent this squeaking.
Does anyone have experience with this specific type of furniture or tips on how to make the Billy doors quiet permanently without affecting their appearance or function? Thanks in advance!

Cecilera6619 Jul 2020 09:15If the Billy doors squeak, silicone spray usually helps. Just spray it on the hinges, open and close a few times, and that’s usually all it takes.
Alternatively, you can use some solid grease if the spray does not have any effect.

I have already considered using lubricants but am unsure which one is best – oils, silicone spray, or solid grease? This is an important question because not all lubricants are ideal for wood and furniture fittings.
1. Silicone spray: In my experience, this is the most suitable option for Billy cabinet doors. It is clear, lubricates well, and does not leave stains, which is important since you often don’t apply it precisely on the surface. Additionally, it doesn’t attract dust.
2. Oil: For example, sewing machine or machine oil is not recommended. It can damage the surface and attracts dust over time, which soils the hinges.
3. Solid grease: Good for some metal-on-metal contacts, but often too thick for the fine hinges of Billy doors.
Besides lubricating, it is also worth adjusting the hinges. Ikea furniture hinges are often designed so they can be adjusted with a screwdriver – both horizontally and vertically. This adjustment can reduce friction that causes squeaking.
Summary:
- Try silicone spray first
- Clean doors and hinges before lubricating
- Check hinge screws and adjust if necessary
A common mistake is using too much lubricant right away or not cleaning beforehand. Thoroughly clean all metal parts and use no more than necessary.

Furthermore, I would like to add that in some cases the hinges causing the issue may show slight wear. In such cases, in addition to lubricating, gently tightening the screws and, if necessary, replacing the hinges can help.
If the doors are stored in conditions with high humidity or if there is moisture in the room, wood swelling can also cause squeaking. It is important to maintain a balanced indoor climate in such situations.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that some builders occasionally attach a thin felt pad to the contact points of Billy doors to reduce noise.
