I have a white Kallax shelving unit from Ikea that I have been using for about two years. I noticed that over time it has become noticeably darker. It almost looks like the wood has developed a yellowish tint or a patina that has changed the original light shade. The shelf is placed in a location with moderate light exposure, no direct sunlight, and I mostly use it for books and decorations. Does anyone else know this phenomenon? And could you perhaps share tips on how to keep the Kallax white or at least reverse the darker tone? Maybe the surface treatment or cleaning method also plays a role. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

This is actually quite common with white lacquered surfaces like those on Kallax furniture, especially with particleboard covered with melamine. Over time, environmental factors such as humidity, low-level UV exposure, or certain cleaning agents can cause slight discoloration of the surface. Air quality also plays a role, as smoke, dust, or vapors can settle on the surface.

A good tip is to clean the shelf regularly with a slightly damp cloth (just water or a mild dish soap) to remove deposits. However, products containing alcohol or strong solvents should be avoided as they can damage the surface.

If the discoloration is more pronounced, you could try using a firmer sponge, but very gently. Alternatively, there are special furniture cleaners designed for melamine-coated surfaces that can often help neutralize color differences somewhat. If you want, I can gladly share some product names.

This is not an isolated case. White furniture often darkens over time. Simply wipe it with mild dishwasher water, avoid using harsh cleaners. For more stubborn discolorations, furniture surface erasers can help.

Absolutely right! I once had my Kallax placed next to the stove, and over time it developed a warm patina – not exactly the most attractive look, let’s say 😅.

One more thing I wanted to mention: sometimes it helps to move the shelf to a different spot, where there’s less air pollution or no direct heat sources. By the way, a bit of light is actually good for white surfaces, as it prevents them from yellowing too quickly.

Oh, and a touch of furniture wax? Definitely worth trying – it refreshes the surface a bit without damaging it. 🙂

Hey, I think this is a very interesting topic!

I also have a white Kallax, and yes, it did actually get a bit darker over time. But I was really happy when I accidentally discovered that an eraser can work wonders against this discoloration! Just gently rub over it and voilà – the white comes back.

Try that first before using any chemical products! I’m glad if I can be helpful!! :-)

That is exactly the point. The Kallax is made of particleboard coated with melamine resin. While this surface is durable, it is not immune to certain substances or environmental factors. UV light can cause slight yellowing of the surface even without direct sunlight, for example through artificial light sources or large windows.

In addition, alcohol-based cleaners or abrasive agents are not recommended, as they can damage the coating and worsen the effect. However, there are special cleaners designed for melamine-coated furniture that can help reduce discoloration.

If the discoloration is severe, applying a new surface layer such as a film or paint could be considered, although this involves some effort.

In summary: gentle cleaning, avoiding aggressive substances, and minimizing air pollution are key to maintaining a long-lasting white appearance.
