Hello everyone, I am about to move and plan to transport my Billy shelf including all the books and small items on it. My question is: How can I best secure the contents of the Billy shelf to prevent anything from shifting or getting damaged during transport and loading or unloading? I am especially interested in how to stabilize the individual shelves and the entire unit without having to remove all the shelves and pack everything separately. Does anyone have practical tips or proven methods for this issue? Thanks in advance!

Hey geix47, that’s a very good question that concerns many people before moving a Billy shelf 🙂 I have always tried to keep my shelves as fully packed as possible to avoid the hassle of emptying them. It helps a lot to wrap the shelf tightly several times with strong stretch film – ideally at least three layers – to keep the books from shifting.

You can also cushion the shelves by placing newspaper or packing paper between the books if you want to protect the contents a bit more. The important thing is that nothing feels loose or wobbly. Finally, I like to attach foam strips to the edges of the shelf to prevent scratches on the walls. And always hold the shelf firmly with both hands for better control when carrying ;-)

I hope this helps! Maybe someone else will chime in with other ideas.

Yes, exactly. Otherwise, during transport in the moving truck, place the shelf against the opposite wall and secure the shelves with tape. If possible, lay books flat.

I would like to add to the previous tips: If you do not want to remove the shelves, a combination of proper internal securing and external stabilization is advisable.

First, place the books as tightly together as possible to prevent movement. To avoid gaps, use pieces of cardboard or small cushions as filler material.

To secure the shelves, you can use wide painter's tape from the outside. This tape can be easily removed later and keeps the shelves in place without much effort.

I also recommend wrapping the entire shelving unit lightly with stretch wrap, but first check the height of the shelves to ensure the wrap properly holds them in place.

If the shelving unit is transported on its own, it is also advisable to secure the back panel (if present) well, for example with additional tape or cardboard pieces, to increase stability.

I’ve had similar experiences and think it’s important to secure the bookshelf both inside and out.

A practical method is to pack the books in the shelves into boxes again, so nothing can shift. If this isn’t possible due to space or time constraints, rubber straps or tie-down straps wrapped tightly around the outside of the shelf can help – this secures the entire structure well.

Also, make sure to keep the shelf upright and supported against a stable surface during transport. Another small tip: you can reinforce the bottom and top shelves with support battens (made from plywood or thick cardboard), which helps keep the shelf more stable under load.

I hope this gives you a few ideas on how to move your Billy shelf safely. Good luck!
