Hello everyone,

I plan to mount Malm dressers from the IKEA range on my walls. I am facing the challenge that part of the walls are made of solid concrete, while the other part is timber stud construction with drywall panels.

My question is: What are the best fixing methods for securely and permanently attaching Malm furniture to these two very different wall types? Which anchors and screws should I use for concrete, and how should I proceed with the timber stud walls to ensure the furniture hangs firmly without damaging the wall? Any advice on additional steps, such as pre-drilling or using special mounting rails, would also be very helpful.

Thank you in advance!

For concrete walls, heavy-duty anchors such as metal anchors or foam anchors are recommended; use matching screws. For timber stud walls, screw directly into the timber studs, preferably with wood screws; do not use drywall anchors.

I think using the heaviest anchors right away is a bit excessive. Most of the time, a quality nylon anchor is perfectly sufficient, especially if the piece of furniture isn’t going to be heavily loaded.

Also, why not just use the furniture freestanding? What’s the point of the extra effort for wall mounting? Safety is important, of course, but sometimes things get overcomplicated with too much technical detail.

Timber stud frame: Screw directly into the wooden post. With drywall, this is usually not stable enough. For concrete: use expansion anchors. That holds.

Hey Moruru, that’s a really important question! 🙂

I fixed my Malm dressers to the concrete wall using suitable heavy-duty anchors, which hold extremely well. For the timber stud walls, I used wood screws with pre-drilling – that works great and you don’t have to worry about cracks. A quick tip: always use the wall fasteners supplied by IKEA!

Good luck with the installation, it’s going to look great!

That’s not a valid argument. Anyone concerned about the safety of children or residents should secure furniture firmly. Freestanding tall cabinets are often the number one cause of accidents. Malm dressers, for example, can tip over. This should not be underestimated.

Regarding anchors: For concrete, metal anchors or chemical anchors are recommended, as nylon anchors can sometimes be too weak. The right choice depends on the weight.
