Hello everyone,

I am planning to install IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in my apartment. However, the walls here are unfortunately not completely straight, which I need to consider when planning the cabinet layout. My specific question is: How can I install and align IKEA Metod cabinets precisely despite uneven walls, so that the fronts fit cleanly and no unsightly gaps appear?

I would appreciate practical tips, for example on possible leveling methods, choice of materials for spacers or mounting, how to adjust heights and depths, and which tools are best suited for this.

Thank you in advance for your helpful advice!

Hello,

it is best to use angle brackets and adjustable feet to compensate for unevenness.

A spirit level is essential to align the cabinets properly.

For larger wall irregularities, wooden or plastic spacers are also suitable.

Hello Sydney49,

I am familiar with the issue of uneven walls when installing IKEA Metod cabinets. Here is a detailed process I follow with my clients:

- First of all, you should take very precise measurements of the wall profiles – ideally using a laser distance meter combined with a spirit level and straight edges. This way, you can accurately identify variations in depth and height.

- Use adjustable wall brackets (IKEA offers these for Metod as well) which allow you to align individual cabinets with millimeter precision. This is especially advantageous for tall walls and multiple units.

- For noticeable wall unevenness, it is advisable to install custom-made leveling strips made from plywood, MDF, or hardwood. These can be attached to the back of the cabinets or fixed to the wall to compensate for vertical and horizontal discrepancies.

- A small tip: always check the overall appearance after mounting each element, since minor adjustments can be made later during front installation using the adjustable feet or cover panels.

- Use appropriate screws and wall anchors that are strong and able to withstand the loads, especially if adding wooden strips or spacers.

I would like to know the exact size differences involved in your project to potentially offer more targeted advice.

Thank you for the detailed response! The largest wall dent is about 2.5 cm (1 inch), while larger areas usually fluctuate between 0.5 and 1.5 cm (0.2 and 0.6 inches). The cabinets are going to be installed along a wall just under 3.5 m (11.5 feet) long, so there’s quite a bit of potential for fitting inaccuracies. I would appreciate it if you could provide more specific advice for this range of measurements. It would also be helpful to know if there are any recommended fastening techniques for these types of leveling adjustments.

Use adjustable wall brackets (IKEA also offers these for Metod), which allow you to align individual cabinets with millimeter precision.

As an addition: The adjustable brackets should be securely fixed to the wall, preferably using heavy-duty anchors or suitable specialized anchors, depending on the wall material.

- For walls with unevenness over 2 cm (0.8 inches), wooden battens as a substructure are a practical solution; these battens should be installed first, leveled precisely.

- The Metod units can then be screwed onto these battens, which not only simplifies installation but also ensures a durable and stable attachment.

- When assembling, also use T-shaped mounting connectors, which link the cabinets together firmly and minimize alignment errors.

If the walls are very uneven, solutions involving drywall or leveling compounds should generally be considered, especially if a permanently flawless appearance is important.

I would like to add that thorough preparation of the wall is crucial. In addition to the previous recommendations:

- Make sure to check the exact distance between the back of the cabinet and the wall at several points before installation; this helps identify any unevenness.

- Consider using specific foam strips or sealing tapes to bridge small gaps between the cabinet and the wall and to reduce sound and moisture transmission.

- During installation, regularly use a spirit level. I personally always place a wooden batten against the wall before attaching the cabinets to make any irregularities visible.

- Finally, I recommend attaching the cabinet fronts only after the units are securely fixed, using the adjustment options of the fittings to visually compensate for unevenness.

If desired, I can provide more detailed information on the appropriate tools and materials.
