Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea KALLAX shelf that I placed directly under my window because the space fits best there. However, I am concerned about the fading of the white surface. Since the sunlight shines directly on the shelf, I’m wondering about effective methods or tips to prevent or at least slow down the fading. I would prefer not to use window films or curtains, as I don’t want to reduce the natural daylight.

Do you have any experience with special protective coatings, UV window films, or care products that help maintain color durability? Or maybe other easy-to-implement solutions for everyday use?

I look forward to your advice! Thanks in advance.

If options like blackout or privacy measures are off the table, the best alternative is to use UV protection films on the windows. These are transparent and allow almost the full light intensity through, but block harmful UV radiation that causes fading.

Additionally, you could treat the KALLAX with UV-resistant furniture waxes or surface sealants that offer some protection to the material. Make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, as using the wrong products can damage the surface.

UV protection film is the simplest solution; it lets light in while blocking UV rays.

Otherwise, regularly rub furniture with furniture wax.

Hey,

I had the same problem with my KALLAX and tried using a UV protection film – barely noticeable, no dark room! 🙂

If you don’t want to use film, maybe position the shelf so that direct sunlight only hits it in the morning or evening, which reduces UV exposure.

Or you could place plants in front that filter the light, which also looks nice and creates a cozy atmosphere 🙂

That’s a good point. UV intensity is higher at midday than in the morning or evening, so orientation or timing of use can make a difference.

In addition, it’s advisable to choose light-colored furniture. Although KALLAX laminate is quite durable, strong sunlight can still cause fading on painted and melamine-coated surfaces.

Thanks in advance for the tips!

One question: Is a standard UV protection film from a hardware store also suitable for window panes? Or are there quality differences I should be aware of?

I was a bit surprised by furniture wax because I thought smooth plastic surfaces like those on KALLAX don’t respond well to it. Does it really affect the color?
