Hello everyone,

I have unfortunately noticed some unpleasant scratches and small dents on my Malm chest of drawers from Ikea, caused by everyday use. Since I do not want to replace the furniture, my question is: How can I repair damage to Malm furniture myself so that it becomes visually discreet or even nearly invisible?

I am particularly interested in methods, materials, or products that are easy for non-professionals to apply, such as special repair kits, fillers, or suitable varnishes or oils for the light wood finish. Are there any specific considerations to keep in mind, especially regarding the typical surface and the MDF material?

I look forward to your tips, especially if you have experience with similar pieces of furniture.

For small scratches, a furniture repair marker in a matching color often helps. For dents, you can use wood wax or filler. Afterwards, lightly sand the surface and treat it with an appropriate sealant.

Malms MDF panels are coated with melamine resin, which makes surface repairs more difficult because traditional wood fillers or paints often do not adhere well. For scratches, I recommend using special melamine resin touch-up pens or repair sticks designed for IKEA furniture.

For deeper damage, highly diluted wood fillers can be used, but it is important to seal the area afterward with appropriate furniture or melamine lacquer sprays to minimize color and texture differences.

As a general rule, test the product on an inconspicuous area before application to avoid damaging the surface. MDF absorbs liquids quickly, so fast processing is essential.

Here is a brief guide on how to repair Malm furniture damage yourself:

1. Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the damaged area with a lightly damp cloth to remove dust and grease.

2. Small scratches: Use wood repair or touch-up markers for color matching. These are available at hardware stores specifically for melamine surfaces.

3. Dents: If the surface is intact but pressed in, you can try to raise the dent using steam and heat (e.g., an iron with a damp cloth in between). Be careful and test on the back side first!

4. Larger holes: Use impregnated wood filler, then sand smoothly after it has dried.

5. Sealing: Finally, choose a suitable furniture melamine spray lacquer for protection and to visually blend the repaired area.

Tips: Avoid applying too much filler at once; better to work in layers. Sanding between layers ensures an even surface. Patience during drying is important.

That explains a lot. Which sprays or paints are specifically suitable for melamine resin? Is there a particular product line to look out for? I assume that simple clear coats from hardware stores are not very effective in this case, right?

And what about repair kits available online specifically for Ikea furniture – are they any good or mostly a waste of money?

Hey Adrian9,

I treated some minor scratches on my Malm dresser with a common furniture repair kit designed specifically for light IKEA colors. It worked pretty well for me, but the scratches didn’t completely disappear—more like they faded, if you know what I mean. 😉

With special melamine surfaces like that, you can’t work miracles, but I think with a bit of patience and the right technique, you can get a really decent result. Important: Let the repairs dry thoroughly, or you’ll get visible edges.

A small tip: For dents, the steam method can be really effective, I read somewhere. You might want to try it carefully.
