Hello everyone,

I have unfortunately noticed some unpleasant scratches and small dents on my Malm chest of drawers from Ikea, caused by everyday use. Since I do not want to replace the furniture, my question is: How can I repair damage to Malm furniture myself so that it becomes visually discreet or even nearly invisible?

I am particularly interested in methods, materials, or products that are easy for non-professionals to apply, such as special repair kits, fillers, or suitable varnishes or oils for the light wood finish. Are there any specific considerations to keep in mind, especially regarding the typical surface and the MDF material?

I look forward to your tips, especially if you have experience with similar pieces of furniture.

I also really like these kinds of DIY repairs because they can extend the life of furniture and save money.

If the surface is intact but dented, you can try to raise the dent using steam and heat (for example, an iron with a damp cloth in between).

This actually worked on one of my Malm drawers. Just make sure to always place something protective between the iron and the furniture, otherwise you’ll get ugly marks. Patience and a gentle touch are also important.

And as with all melamine surfaces: it’s better to apply less and build up gradually, because sanding or scraping off is really difficult.

I am adding a few steps that are often overlooked:

- Preparation: Depending on the type of damage, lightly sand the area with very fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 320) to remove loose particles and roughen the surface.

- Repair compound: Make sure the filler is compatible with melamine (special furniture repair fillers available from professional suppliers). Apply in a thin layer to avoid cracking later.

- After it dries, touch up the area with color-matched paint or a furniture marker.

- Once the repair is complete, sand the area with a fine sanding pad and treat it with furniture care or wax polish to achieve a uniform finish.

Also keep in mind that melamine furniture can expand slightly due to UV exposure, which may make small repair spots noticeable over time.

"A small addition: The steam method can be really valuable for dents."

I will definitely try that.

"I recommend special melamine resin touch-up pens or repair sticks designed for IKEA furniture for scratches."

Could you maybe share a source or brand names that you personally recommend?

My goal is to repair as authentically as possible and with minimal effort, so the spot won’t be noticeable afterward. If the price isn’t too high, I’m also willing to try a set, but ideally, you want to rely on real quality, right?

Thank you all for the helpful advice so far!
