Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of safely transporting my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets during an upcoming move. Since the cabinets consist of multiple parts and some are quite large and heavy, I am wondering what the best way to pack them is to prevent scratches or damage and to make them easy to handle during loading. Are there proven tips for disassembly, suitable packing materials, or special methods to securely store and transport the individual modules? I am also interested in whether it makes sense to fully dismantle certain elements or leave them assembled. Who has experience with this and can offer practical and helpful advice?

I would recommend completely disassembling the cabinets. Pack screws and small parts into small bags and label them clearly. For protection, it’s best to use bubble wrap or blankets to prevent surface scratches during transport. Then store the parts flat and secure them with straps.

That is generally a sensible approach, but I think it’s important to carefully weigh the effort against the benefits. Fully taking them apart does increase safety during transport, but it also carries the risk of making mistakes during reassembly or losing parts. Therefore, my question is: Have you ever experienced problems with reassembling after a move?

Additionally, I wonder if it might be possible to at least keep the main structure connected—such as the carcass—while removing doors and shelves. Overall, in my opinion, stability during transport should also be considered, not just surface protection.

My recommendation: Metod cabinets should definitely be partially disassembled. Remove doors and drawers to reduce weight. The carcasses can be transported together if handled carefully, but they must be well padded inside, for example with foam or thick blankets, to prevent shifting.

Use sturdy boxes or furniture covers for additional surface protection to avoid scratches. When disassembling, carefully store all screws in labeled bags. Keep the assembly instructions handy, preferably photographed or printed, to facilitate reassembly.

For transport in a moving truck, store the parts laying flat and do not stack them without protection. This reduces pressure marks.

Absolutely! And I would add: Make a small “screw set” for each piece—that really saves stress during reassembly!

I recently moved my Metod cabinets—I took off the doors and shelves, which significantly reduced the weight. I packed everything with old wool blankets; they offer great protection and are eco-friendly as well. Sure, it takes some effort, but it’s better than dealing with scratches and damaged edges afterward.

Honestly, if you move cabinets with at least two people, handling goes smoothly. No stress, no crushing injuries. My advice: don’t rush, just take it step by step. That way, the move stays relaxed—even with Ikea furniture.
