tau60Hello everyone,
I am considering using my IKEA KALLAX shelf as a windowsill. The surface would be very practical for plants and decorations, but I am concerned about possible water stains or damage from moisture, especially when watering plants or if condensation forms on the windows.
So my question to the community is: Has anyone had experience using a KALLAX as a windowsill, and can offer tips on how to best protect the surface from water stains or other moisture-related issues?
Are there any special protective measures or accessories that you use?
Thanks in advance for your answers!

My question to the community: Has anyone had experience using KALLAX as a window sill, and can offer advice on how to best protect the surface from water marks or other moisture-related issues?Hey tau60, I also use my KALLAX as a window sill, and I can tell you: As enjoyable as it is, moisture can sometimes be a real nuisance. I always place a thin, transparent plastic sheet or some kind of table runner over it – it’s almost invisible and absorbs condensation or small splashes.
I also recommend small coasters or trays for plants so no water sits directly on the surface. This way, you stay flexible when watering and your KALLAX surface stays clean and free of stains.
Of course, this isn’t a 100% guarantee against all marks, but so far it has worked really well for me! 🙂

Are there any special protective measures or perhaps accessories that you use?Hello tau60,
I work professionally with furniture and surface treatments, so I’d like to go into some detail here.
The KALLAX shelf basically has a melamine coating, which is fairly resistant to moisture but not completely waterproof. If you use it as a windowsill and place plants on it, I recommend paying special attention to the following points:
1. Avoid direct water contact: Even small water marks can cause unsightly stains over time.
2. Protective mats: There are special PVC or silicone mats that are waterproof but breathable. You can cut these to size and place them under the plant pots.
3. Sealing the edges: Water often seeps in at the edges, causing the worst damage. Transparent edge protectors or clear silicone sealing tapes can be very helpful here.
4. Regular maintenance: Wipe the surface regularly with a slightly damp cloth, but avoid standing water.
5. Alternative surface protection: Sometimes surfaces with a polyurethane-based sealant applied as an additional layer can help, but be cautious to avoid altering the appearance.
Finally, I’m curious how you manage light and air exchange by your window, as high humidity levels can increase the risks.
I hope this helps for now – if needed, I can provide more specific product suggestions!

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to quickly jump in and say: KALLAX as a windowsill? Brilliant! I love it! You get so much space for plants, books, and small items 🙂
Regarding water stains, I really like the idea of using a thick rubber or cork mat. It can handle a lot, and I even have some with cool patterns that add a nice visual touch.
I also agree with regularly wiping it dry – a quick wipe with a cloth keeps everything looking great.
So: go for it, turn it into an awesome windowsill, but make sure to add a protective layer – then it works perfectly! :-)
