Hello everyone,

I have a specific question that’s been on my mind recently: Is there a way to childproof the drawers of the IKEA Besta system?

I own several Besta cabinets with drawers that shouldn’t be easily opened due to young children in the household. I’m looking for a reliable solution that is both safe and practical, without significantly limiting the drawers’ functionality or requiring major modifications.

Does anyone know of suitable child safety locks specifically designed for Besta drawers? Or are there any tricks or accessories that IKEA offers or that are generally recommended?

I look forward to well-informed experiences and helpful advice.

Yes, there are various options. Basically, there are no official IKEA child safety locks specifically designed for BESTA drawers. The most effective solution is to use universal child safety locks for drawers that work with a clamping or adhesive mechanism. Make sure the lock is sturdy and cannot be opened without tools.

Another option is self-adhesive latch locks with a push release, which are installed on the inside and are suitable for retrofitting without damaging the furniture.

Summary:
- Universal child safety locks (clamping or adhesive types)
- Latches installed on the inside
- No official IKEA solutions

I recommend measuring the drawers carefully before purchasing to choose the right solution.

I use magnetic child safety locks. They are invisible and work well with BESTA drawers. Simply a magnet on the outside and a latch on the inside.

Magnetic locks are really a smart solution because they don’t affect the appearance, and the little ones are quite surprised that they still can’t open the drawers. 😎

I also installed some on my BESTA shelf – the installation is simple, and you don’t have any awkward latches or bolts on the outside. This keeps the furniture looking much more seamless!

When it comes to safety, I recommend a combination of mechanical safety locks and careful placement of the cabinets. A simple child safety lock will often be discovered and overcome by children sooner or later.

Drawer locks that provide multiple locking points are useful, meaning they not only prevent the drawer from being pulled out but also secure the drawer front from being opened.

Additionally, there are retrofit locking systems with lever mechanisms that can be attached inside the drawer frame and are harder to open.

To everyone recommending magnetic solutions: How durable are they with frequent use? Do the adhesive strips come off after a while? Does this work just as well with the large BESTA drawer that has metal sides?
