Over the past few weeks, I have noticed with a BILLY shelving unit that the doors sometimes open with difficulty and do not operate smoothly. Especially during quick movements or when fully swinging the door open, it occasionally catches or even briefly sticks before it can be opened completely.

My question is: Why do the doors on BILLY sometimes fail to open smoothly and without resistance? Are there known mechanical or design reasons why the hinges or door mounting might not always function fluidly and without friction? I would like to understand whether this issue could be related to the installation, material quality, the hinges themselves, or possibly environmental factors causing the doors to occasionally stick.

I completely understand your frustration when a seemingly simple mechanism sometimes causes problems.

From my experience, it’s often due to the installation: if the doors aren’t perfectly plumb or the hinges are slightly misaligned, it quickly starts to stick. Even if the screws loosen a bit or the wood changes due to moisture, the doors tend to jam. I’ve had this issue myself and was able to fix it by slightly tightening the hinges or making some minor adjustments.

It’s annoying, but often it’s a small detail that was overlooked or that shifts over time.

In my view, it is important to consider the causes in a differentiated way.

Mechanically speaking, BILLY shelves usually use simple surface-mounted hinges. These are very sensitive to slight deformation or expansions caused by heat. Additionally, incorrect installation, such as screws inserted at an angle or uneven pressure when fastening, can result in doors not being properly aligned.

Furthermore, the material plays a role: particleboard tends to swell with high humidity, making it harder to open the doors.

I recommend first checking that the hinges are securely fastened, then adjusting the door alignment (if necessary, with a screwdriver), and paying attention to room humidity. This usually fixes or at least significantly reduces the sticking.

In summary, the occasional sticking when opening BILLY doors is due to a combination of mechanical, structural, and environmental factors.

This is exactly right: precise adjustment of the door position is crucial here. The hinges on BILLY are not high-quality soft-closing or self-closing models but rather simple metal fittings. Without exact installation, sticking can easily occur.

This is also important to consider: for optimal function, humidity should be around 40-60%.

Additionally, I recommend regularly lubricating the hinges with an appropriate lubricant to reduce friction. In my view, these measures can minimize the resistance when opening the door, making it practically stick-free.
