Hello everyone,
I have a small problem with my pet and an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit. My large cat often sleeps in the open compartments of the KALLAX, so the shelf regularly sees animal use. Unfortunately, this causes a lot of pet hair to accumulate on the shelves and in the corners. The hair is sometimes quite fine, sometimes a bit coarse, depending on the shedding season.
Since the shelf is made of laminated wood panels, I want to avoid harsh cleaning products or aggressive methods that could damage the surface. I also prefer not to use overly damp cloths to prevent the wood from swelling.
Does anyone have experience with effectively and gently removing pet hair from a KALLAX like this? Are there any special cleaning tools, tips, or home remedies you would recommend?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

1. Dry coarse cleaning: First, use a vacuum cleaner attachment without a brush to remove loose hairs.
2. Put on rubber gloves and wipe the surface with light, circular motions to loosen embedded hairs.
3. Wipe again with a dry microfiber cloth to pick up the remaining hairs.
4. If needed, slightly dampen the microfiber cloth to catch the last lint. Important: The cloth should be only damp, not wet!
Common mistakes are using too much moisture and using brush attachments that can scratch the wood. I have been using this method on my wooden shelves for years and can recommend it.

Thank you for the many helpful tips! I’m dealing with a cat that slips into the KALLAX compartments and then spreads hair everywhere. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only one with this problem.
I’m also curious about how you handle it when the compartments get a bit damp, for example, when wiping them briefly with a damp cloth. Are there specific methods to prevent mold or damage to the wood? Also, how do you minimize hair buildup over the long term?

To reduce hair accumulation permanently, you can provide cat beds or resting areas that are easier to clean. This way, the KALLAX stays cleaner.
