Hello everyone, I recently bought a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA, and when unpacking it, I noticed a fairly strong smell of solvents. Does anyone have experience with the best and, above all, safest way to air out a piece of furniture like this? I want to avoid the chemical odor lingering for a long time in the home or potentially causing any health issues. Are there any recommended methods or special tips to counteract the off-gassing using simple means? Thank you in advance!

First, it is important to place the shelf in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or in a room with open windows. Solvents evaporate over time, so frequent airing is the best solution. KALLAX shelves typically consist of coated particleboard, with the smell originating from solvent residues in adhesives or finishes. Off-gassing can last from several days to weeks but is generally harmless as long as the indoor air is regularly refreshed. However, avoid prolonged direct exposure to solvent fumes.

Immediately after unpacking, place the shelf outdoors in fresh air and ventilate it several times a day. This usually eliminates the odor within a few days.

Hello Rujuti, I completely understand your concern about the smell from KALLAX shelves. The solvent odor often comes from solvents in adhesives and coatings used during manufacturing. To air out the shelves, I recommend the following steps:

1. If possible, place the shelf on a balcony or terrace, keeping windows and doors open.
2. Air the room several times a day for at least 20 minutes, even indoors.
3. Avoid assembling the shelf in small, poorly ventilated rooms.
4. Additional air purifiers with activated carbon filters can help reduce the odors.

Usually, the odors dissipate after about one to two weeks, sometimes a bit longer. If the smell remains unusually strong or causes headaches, it is advisable to exercise caution.

That is correct. Additionally, I can recommend the following:

- Leave the shelf in a well-ventilated area for at least 3–5 days, ideally with some air movement.
- If possible, wipe the back and inside surfaces of the shelf with a damp cloth to help remove excess residues.
- From my experience, placing small bowls with baking soda or activated charcoal nearby can also help absorb odors.

Patience is important, as the emissions will gradually disappear over time.

Oh yes, those can work wonders! I once had a piece of furniture with a similar smell, and activated carbon really helped to get rid of the odor faster. 😉 I also think it’s important not to lose patience—sometimes these things just need time.
