Hello everyone,

I’m about to assemble an Ikea Hemnes sideboard and am looking for tips on how to complete the assembly quickly while still achieving a neat result. The instructions are clear, but I wonder if anyone has experience with tricks to save time during assembly without compromising stability or making mistakes. Are there any tools that can help simplify the steps? I plan to set up the sideboard on my own, so it would also be helpful to know if certain steps are better done with two people.

Looking forward to your replies!

Hello,

I’m happy to shed some light on this, as there are a few small tricks specifically for Hemnes. First and foremost: take time to carefully read through the manual before you start. Sort all the parts and screws by category before beginning. This will save you time because you won’t have to search for items during assembly.

- Tools: A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque is ideal, as it prevents over-tightening the screws.
- Follow the assembly steps in the exact order; going back to redo steps later can waste a lot of time.
- Some connections in Hemnes require pre-drilling if the holes don’t align perfectly; avoid doing this and instead work precisely according to the instructions.

If you’re assembling alone, make sure to put the largest piece—usually the main frame—on a stable surface to avoid damaging parts. Installing the glass fronts or doors can be done solo, but it’s faster and safer with two people.

One question: do you have experience using screwdrivers? Using a manual screwdriver can slow down the whole process significantly.

I hope this helps for now. If you want, I can share more detailed tips.

I think it’s great that you are preparing so thoroughly for the assembly! Sometimes I feel like putting together a piece of furniture takes forever, even though the manual is only 10 pages long. My advice is definitely to take plenty of time for preparation—read through all the steps and sort out the parts beforehand.

One insight from my last Hemnes assembly: take deliberate breaks when you get stuck instead of rushing and risking mistakes.

And don’t worry, it’s normal if it doesn’t go perfectly right away—I’ve also thought about how it could be done faster in the beginning. Always remember: quality comes before speed! But your idea to ask how to be faster is great. I hope others can share tips with you as well.

In brief:

- Sort screws.
- Use a cordless screwdriver with torque control.
- Check all parts before assembly.
- Place the cabinet on a stable surface.
- It’s better to install doors with two people.

This saves time and trouble.

This is a very helpful tip. As mentioned before, positioning the doors is often tricky when working alone. For anyone new to assembling furniture, I generally recommend realistically assessing which steps can be managed solo and where assistance is definitely needed. This not only shortens the assembly time but also leads to a better result.

Additionally, I have had good experiences assembling parts against a free wall or in a corner. This helps prevent pieces from slipping or falling over. Especially with Hemnes, the components are relatively heavy and large, so this approach improves control.

If the assembly takes longer than expected, it is perfectly fine to take breaks during the process. What matters most in the end is that everything is securely assembled and the furniture is free from damage.

Hello!

Last year, I assembled a Hemnes sideboard and was honestly surprised at how quickly it went once I followed these tips:

- Battery-powered screwdriver is really great – it saves a lot of effort and time!
- Sort all screws, dowels, and parts by type on a large table; this greatly improves organization.
- For the base parts and drawers, I assembled everything first, then attached them to the main frame.
- I temporarily supported the doors with a small wooden wedge to keep them in place, which made it easier to align the hinges.

Once the assembly gets going, it’s really motivating. Keep at it, you’ll do great! 🙂
