ᐅ My KALLAX doors close too loudly against the shelving – how can I soften or dampen them?

fagijeHello everyone,
I have an Ikea KALLAX shelf unit with hinged doors, but I have a problem: The doors slam too hard when closing, which is not only unpleasantly loud but, in my opinion, could also stress the cabinet structure over time. I want to soften the closing impact of the KALLAX doors without resorting to complicated or expensive solutions. Do any of you have tested, practical methods or materials that can be easily applied to reduce the slamming? I am especially interested in experiences with self-adhesive dampers, felt, or rubber that can be used discreetly.
I understand that the issue depends on the hinge mechanism and the door stop, but my doors are already properly installed and adjusted. Thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

Hello fagije,
Regarding your issue with the KALLAX doors and the loud slamming, I can offer some specific recommendations. These noises mainly occur due to hard contact against the cabinet frame or the hinges themselves.
A simple yet effective solution is self-adhesive furniture bumpers made of silicone or rubber, which you attach to the inner corners of the door where it hits the cabinet. These bumpers reduce the impact without affecting functionality.
Additionally, you can stick felt pads (available at hardware stores or furniture suppliers) on the inside of the door to soften the contact. Be careful: if the door becomes too loose, it may not hold properly.
Another option is so-called "soft-close" hinges, which mechanically slow down and cushion the closing action. However, these typically require installation effort and are not usually original parts for KALLAX.
In summary: self-adhesive bumpers or felt pads are the most practical and affordable methods. Make sure to choose a suitable thickness so the doors don’t become too hard to close.

I wonder if the problem might also be related to the design of the KALLAX shelf itself, since it wasn’t originally intended for doors with hinges.

My doors are already properly installed and adjustedHow exactly did you check that? Because a misaligned door can also be the cause of the loud impact. A good first step might be to carefully realign the hinges in detail—not just superficially.
Another thought: when it comes to noise prevention, in my opinion silicone bumpers are not the most effective solution, as they only reduce the sound but do not completely eliminate vibrations. Perhaps a thin rubber gasket between the door and the frame of the shelf would be a more durable option.
What do you think about those rubber seals commonly used in car doors? The only question would be whether they can be properly fitted to the KALLAX dimensions.

With KALLAX doors, the standard hinges are simple and offer limited adjustment options. However, sometimes it is possible, with a bit of care, to adjust the doors so they close more gently. Usually, precise positioning down to the millimeter is all it takes.
Regarding cushioning, I have personally had very good experiences with small felt pads attached to the inside edges of the doors, often where the door meets the shelving unit. These are inexpensive, durable, and barely affect the door’s function.
For anyone who doesn’t want to replace the entire hinge, felt pads are the first choice. They act as buffers and absorb much of the impact energy. However, it’s important to choose good quality pads so they don’t come off after just a few weeks.
Additionally, I recommend thoroughly cleaning the hinges beforehand and possibly applying some lubricant (e.g., silicone oil) to achieve smoother opening and closing.
Maybe you could try this approach, fagije. Good luck!
