I am considering upgrading the handles on my IKEA Besta furniture because I’m not really happy with the standard handles and would like something a bit more unique.
So, my question to the community is: Are there any recommended and practical upgrades or alternative handle options for IKEA Besta that are easy to install, high-quality, and possibly look significantly better than the original handles?
I am especially interested in solutions that are not only visually appealing but also functional—that is, durable and sturdy. Has anyone had experience with specific brands, types of fittings, or installation methods?
I might also be interested in DIY tips if anyone has created their own solutions.
Thanks in advance for any input!

Hello Ba_mathias,
Your plan to upgrade the Besta handles is definitely feasible, but there are some details to consider.
First, it’s important to know that IKEA Besta furniture usually uses handles with standardized drilling distances. A typical hole spacing is 128 mm (5 inches), but this can vary depending on the version. When looking for alternative handles, you should measure carefully first.
Besides the standard drill holes, there is also the option to fit handle strips or full-surface fronts, which require special adjustments. If you want a classic handle, you need to check whether the new handle is compatible with the depth of the cabinet front—some handles protrude significantly or can only be mounted with longer screws.
Typically, metal handles are the most common upgrade because they are durable and look high quality. However, you can also find leather or wooden handles occasionally from accessory suppliers.
I recommend the following approach:
- Measure the existing handle holes (hole spacing, screw length)
- Choose a handle with the same hole spacing
- Pay attention to screw length and purchase longer screws if needed
- If new holes need to be drilled elsewhere, fill the old holes with filler or putty
If possible, try assembling the handles before replacing them to check stability.
Do you already have a particular style or material preference for the new handles? That might help provide a more precise answer.

Do you already have a specific style or material preference for the new handles? Thanks for the detailed advice! I’m leaning towards metal handles, ideally matte or brushed finish, since I prefer a modern but rather minimalist look. Above all, I want to avoid the handles looking too bulky and the screws being too long or not fitting properly.
Also, I’ve heard some people upgrade with handle strips, meaning continuous handles instead of individual ones. Does anyone have experience with how well these work with Besta fronts? I’m concerned there might be stability issues, especially if the front panel is thin.
Handle strips work well if you don’t want to drill holes. You can simply glue them on or use screws, if the front allows it.
Matte brushed metal handles are often available from furniture hardware suppliers. It is important that the hole spacing matches. If necessary, extend the screw length.

Hello Ba_mathias,
I would like to give you a brief guide on how to search for and install new handles for your Besta furniture:
1. Measure the hole spacing:
Carefully measure the distance between the screw holes on your current handles. IKEA usually uses 128 mm (5 inches), but you should verify this to be sure.
2. Check the hole placement:
For Besta fronts, pay attention to the thickness and appearance. The holes must be correctly positioned – if you are using handle strips, study the installation instructions carefully, as the adhesive may not always hold securely.
3. Handle material and finish:
For matte brushed metal handles, stainless steel or aluminum are suitable. Avoid metal with a cheap-looking coating.
4. Installation:
Make sure the screws are not too long to avoid damaging the front. Ideally, screws are included when you buy the handles; otherwise, you’ll need to purchase suitable ones separately.
5. DIY alternative:
If you like experimenting, you can make handles yourself from wood or leather and customize them, but proper attachment is crucial.
Summary: The simplest and most functional method is to replace the handles with matching metal ones in the correct size. Handle strips are optional but should be tested beforehand.
Good luck!
