Hello everyone,

I own several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces that have acquired some noticeable dents and scratches from everyday use. My specific question is: How can these dents and scratches on Hemnes furniture be repaired most effectively and permanently, without significantly damaging the surface or negatively affecting the appearance?

I am interested in methods for cleaning and preparing the affected areas, as well as tips for filling or concealing small to medium-sized scratches. Which materials (e.g., wood filler, wax sticks, varnishes) are best suited for this, and what is the recommended step-by-step approach?

Additionally, I would like to know if there are any special techniques to restore the original color and wood grain of the pine wood used in Hemnes furniture as accurately as possible.

I look forward to your experiences and advice so I can bring the furniture back to good condition.

Thank you in advance!

To do this successfully, a bit of patience and the right materials are needed. HEMNES furniture is made of solid pine wood, usually with a matte lacquer or a thin protective wood finish. The goal is to gently restore the surface to avoid color differences and noticeable unevenness.

First, lightly sand the damaged areas with fine sandpaper (240-grit or finer)—this smooths the edges of the scratches and removes small lacquer residues. Important: always sand in the direction of the grain to avoid visible sanding marks. Then clean the area well, ideally with a dry, dust-free cloth.

For repairing dents, I recommend special wood filler or wax repair kits available for light wood. Since pine often has a yellowish tint, look for a color that closely matches this tone. Wax sticks are great if the scratches are not too deep. You need to work them into the dent using a plastic scraper and then polish after drying.

For deeper damages, wood filler is better—but use it sparingly, as too much filler will be very noticeable. After drying, sand carefully again and then seal the area with a suitable clear lacquer or wood oil.

It is very important to ventilate the repaired area well for several hours and avoid any direct moisture on the surface so that the repaired spot cures properly and blends in color-wise. If possible, test how the material reacts on an inconspicuous spot beforehand.

One more question: Are your HEMNES furniture surfaces lacquered, or do you have oiled or waxed wood? This influences the choice of repair products.

I hope this helps you already! Feel free to ask more.

Hey ronnatal47, great question!

I have a HEMNES set myself and can only say – don’t worry about scratches, they are easy to fix!

Wax crayons are great if the scratches aren’t too deep.

That’s exactly my advice – I always use these wood wax sticks because they are super easy to apply. It’s important to polish a bit afterward so the surface shines nicely and looks more even.

If the dents are a bit bigger, I use wood filler, but always with a color that matches your wood as closely as possible – otherwise, it really stands out. And hey – always be patient! 😊

It’s also a good idea to test the product on the back or an inconspicuous corner of the furniture first. That way, you can see if it’s a good match.

Fingers crossed your furniture looks great again afterward! You’ve got this!

Which materials (e.g., wood filler, wax sticks, varnishes) work best here, and what is the recommended step-by-step process?

- Lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper
- Repair scratches using a wax stick (choose a matching color)
- For deeper dents, apply wood filler and allow it to dry
- Once hardened, sand smooth and seal
- For sealing, use either clear varnish or wood oil

This is usually sufficient. Be sure to choose materials with moisture resistance.
