Good morning everyone,

I am planning to furnish my guest room with IKEA Hemnes furniture and would like to know the best ways to adapt it specifically for this room.

I am mainly interested in how to modify or combine the individual pieces in terms of functionality and design to make the most efficient use of the space while still creating a welcoming atmosphere. Are there clever modifications, useful additions, or DIY ideas you would recommend?

I am also interested in practical aspects such as storage, lighting, and material compatibility.

How can I best tailor the HEMNES series to meet the needs of a guest room without losing the classic design but still optimizing the use of the space?

Looking forward to your tips!

Regarding the technical aspects of remodeling and adapting IKEA Hemnes furniture for the guest room, I would like to add:

- Most HEMNES furniture is made of solid wood (pine), which makes sanding and refinishing easier.
- When installing drawers or adding rollers under the bed, the underlying wooden structures must remain stable; therefore, always consider the load-bearing capacity.
- For installing LED light strips, 12V plug-in systems are suitable, which can be discreetly mounted behind the upper or lower panels.
- If the room is particularly small, I recommend fold-down desks from the HEMNES series, which can be wall-mounted.

Feel free to ask if you would like me to go into more detail about any technical construction aspects.

For example, you can equip the HEMNES bed frame with drawers under the sleeping surface

That sounds good. How stable are the drawers that can be installed afterwards? Do you have to build them yourself, or does IKEA offer their own retrofit solutions? I want to avoid the storage space becoming unusable quickly due to instability.

Would you recommend priming the wood before painting? Does that provide long-term benefits, especially in a guest room that may occasionally be exposed to some moisture?

The drawers designed specifically for the HEMNES bed are available directly from IKEA and have been tested for load capacity—you don’t need to build them yourself.

The drawer construction is quite solid, as they are made of plywood with a solid wood front and run on sturdy runners.

For those who want even more durability, reinforcing metal brackets can be added underneath the drawers.

Regarding priming: yes, it is always recommended before painting. A primer protects the wood from moisture and ensures better adhesion of the paint.

In a guest room, where moisture can occasionally occur due to ventilation or increased use, this is definitely advisable to preserve the furniture in the long term.

Regarding color adjustments, you can often find replacement handles for the HEMNES series at IKEA in various materials and colors. Simply swapping the handles can significantly change the style without much effort.

Adding open shelves from the series or similar options can also make the room feel more open.

In my guest room, I also have HEMNES furniture in white and covered the back panels with adhesive film, which you can get at hardware stores, to vary colors and patterns. This makes everything feel more personal.

Cover strips or wall mounts on dressers and shelves provide additional stability, especially if the room is frequently used by guests.

It is advisable not to attach the furniture directly to the wall but to leave a small gap, so that moisture does not damage the furniture over time.

Regarding lighting: LED strips or small spotlights can be retrofitted to make the guest room cozier and more functional.

It is best to use warm white light, as it creates a more inviting and relaxing atmosphere.

Mounted under shelves or behind the headboard, these light sources provide a pleasant environment for guests without being too bright.
