Good morning everyone,

I am planning to furnish my guest room with IKEA Hemnes furniture and would like to know the best ways to adapt it specifically for this room.

I am mainly interested in how to modify or combine the individual pieces in terms of functionality and design to make the most efficient use of the space while still creating a welcoming atmosphere. Are there clever modifications, useful additions, or DIY ideas you would recommend?

I am also interested in practical aspects such as storage, lighting, and material compatibility.

How can I best tailor the HEMNES series to meet the needs of a guest room without losing the classic design but still optimizing the use of the space?

Looking forward to your tips!

Would you recommend priming the wood before painting?

Yes, definitely. Priming is an important first step because it seals the wood’s pores, improves the adhesion of the topcoat, and increases moisture protection.

I suggest choosing a breathable primer that is specifically designed for solid wood.

For the paint itself, you can opt for a matte finish, which supports modern aesthetics and makes scratches less noticeable.

If the guest room sometimes has higher humidity, applying a water-repellent clear coat on top of the paint layer can also be helpful.

Do you need tips on specific products or painting techniques?

If you’re already renovating: why not convert a Hemnes piece of furniture into a daybed?

There are extendable slatted bed bases that provide a seating area during the day and a comfortable bed at night.

This way, you get double functionality and save space. It’s perfect for smaller rooms, which is often the case with guest rooms.

In my opinion, it also makes the room much more flexible, especially for unexpected visitors.

That would be great, thank you! I’m especially interested in how to ideally apply the primer (brush, roller, sanding between coats?) and how many layers of paint are usually sufficient.

Also, when choosing paint colors, is there anything to particularly consider for a guest room? Do you have any recommendations for colors that preserve the typical HEMNES look but still appear modern?

Regarding the drawers: Thanks for the advice, I’ll go ahead and get the original drawers and possibly reinforce them.
