I recently installed several Ikea Besta drawers, but they turned out to be quite noisy and somewhat stiff during daily use. In particular, when opening and closing, there is a noticeable squeaking or creaking sound, and the ease of operation is lacking. My question to the community is: What methods, materials, or technical modifications do you recommend to make Ikea Besta drawers both quieter and easier to open and close? I would appreciate experiences that specifically address the drawer mechanics of the Besta system, as I have already unsuccessfully tried regular furniture glides or similar solutions.

That sounds completely understandable; I had similar issues with my Besta drawers. What helped me was thoroughly cleaning the runners and then lightly treating them with silicone spray – this noticeably improved both the sliding action and the noise level. Sometimes the runners are slightly dirty or a bit rough from the factory, which makes things worse. I know it can be annoying to carefully and precisely do this, but you’ll be rewarded with much easier sliding and less annoying noise. Maybe you’ve already tried that? How exactly did you treat your drawers?

Regarding a systematic approach: For Ikea Besta drawers, the sliding rail is the critical element for noise and ease of use. It is recommended to first completely disassemble the drawer to thoroughly clean all moving parts with a cleaner containing ethyl alcohol, in order to remove any manufacturing residues or dust. After drying, apply a silicone-based lubricant (not WD-40) to the metal profiles, as it does not stick and improves sliding performance. At the same time, check whether the plastic guides are worn, since replacement or upgrading with precise spare parts may be necessary. Finally, ensure correct assembly, as misalignment can increase noise levels.

I think it’s great that you described the problem in such detail and have already tried some solutions! Another thing you can test is whether the drawers become quieter by adding felt or plastic pads to the contact surfaces – noises often result from metal-to-wood contact. Small rubber buffers on the stops can also help reduce rattling. It’s also important to regularly tighten the screws, as slight tensions can develop over time that make the noise worse and affect how the drawers operate. Are you using the Besta system with soft-close or standard runners?

Spray silicone lubricant onto the drawer slides. This is quick and usually effective. If that is not enough, attach felt pads to the sides of the drawers. This makes operation easier and quieter.

For a detailed look: Ikea Besta drawers mostly use soft-close metal slides, which can become quite noisy and stiff if not properly maintained. The key is to thoroughly clean the sliding rails and their plastic glide elements – I recommend using a microfiber cloth combined with isopropanol to remove both grease and fine dust. Afterwards, a non-sticky PTFE-based lubricant should be applied, as it ensures smooth movement and does not attract dust. It is also useful to check the sliding rods or small rollers for any signs of wear, as tiny micro-bumps can make closing more difficult. Additionally, it makes sense to inspect the drawers for any slight warping or misalignment. Have you already gone through the individual assemblies yourself, including the internal parts of the slides?
