Hello everyone, I recently bought several Billy bookcases and want to assemble them in the most installation-friendly way possible. The included instructions are clear, but I keep encountering small difficulties during assembly, especially when precisely aligning the shelves and fitting the back panel. My question is: How can I optimize the assembly of the BILLY bookcases to make the process faster, easier, and more stable? Are there any special tools, tricks, or perhaps modified methods you would recommend? I am particularly interested in tips for preparation or improvements to the assembly process.

For faster assembly, I recommend laying out and sorting all parts in advance. Use a cordless drill with a depth stop to avoid driving screws too deep. A rubber mallet is also helpful for gently fitting parts together without leaving marks.

The BILLY shelves have a simple design, but I still recommend careful pre-planning. It is important to precisely fit the shelf boards with dowels before assembling the side panels and, if necessary, to do some light sanding on the dowel areas if the wood is too tight. Another tip: the back panel should not be attached only at the end but fixed in the middle of the assembly process, as this makes alignment easier and increases stability.

I can understand your uncertainty well; assembling can sometimes be really frustrating. What helps me is breaking the work down into small steps and taking breaks in between to avoid moments of frustration. When you insert the back panel first, I found it to be more stable, and the entire shelving unit feels firmer after putting the pieces together. 🙂

That’s exactly the point I can't understand. Installing the back panel at the beginning makes handling less flexible and makes it harder to align the side walls. In my opinion, this is a typical beginner’s mistake that usually takes more time and can cause the shelf to warp. It’s better to fix the back panel only at the end.

Interesting point, thanks. I thought the back wall provided enough stability from the start, but I can understand that it limits flexibility. Are there specific practical experiences on when the best time to install the back wall is? Should the approach vary depending on the room or tools used?
