Hello everyone,

I am planning to install new shelves in my attic room, and I want to use Billy bookcases from Ikea. However, the room has sloped ceilings, which makes the layout a bit unusual. So my question is: Which Billy bookcases are suitable for sloped ceilings to make the best use of storage space while also looking good?

Are there specific models, sizes, or accessories I should consider to integrate the angled walls as well as possible? I would also appreciate any tips on how to adjust the shelves so they remain stable and visually appealing despite the sloped ceiling.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly, instead of always fiddling and cutting, why not just buy a custom furniture system or a shelf designed specifically for sloped ceilings?

Thank you for your opinion; I have definitely considered that. However, my budget is limited, and BILLY is one of the few affordable series I can use flexibly in this space.

Additionally, I want to minimize effort on custom work and avoid overwhelming the room with bulky solutions. There are also many advantages to BILLY’s easy shelf interchangeability and simple expandability.

I am happy to receive any further constructive advice!

Additional information: I recommend using the lower BILLY shelves (106 cm (42 inches)) under the sloped ceiling, as this height is more compatible with the slope.

If you shorten the side panels of the shelves to fit the slope, stability should be ensured with extra back panels or stronger dowels.

Important:
- Tighten screws securely
- Attach shelves firmly to the wall
- Optionally use small wedges to level the shelves between the floor and the unit

Also, it can help to partially insert the shelves rather than placing them fully, to allow airflow and flexibility for slanted surfaces.

In my experience, these measures make it possible to use BILLY shelves effectively for sloped ceilings without taking on significant risks.

Good morning,

In addition to the previous tips, here are some technical details that are important when adapting to sloped ceilings:

1. Material thickness: BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a foil coating. When trimming the side panels, it is important to work very carefully to avoid frayed edges.

2. Cutting the slope: It is best to mark the cut lines with a jigsaw suitable for wood and use a template as a guide.

3. Stability: For shortened side panels, it is advisable to install an additional back panel or a sturdy rail on the wall and secure the shelf to it.

4. Load capacity of the shelves: The maximum load is approximately 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf – it’s best not to overload, especially where modifications have been made.

5. Additional tip: To cover the gap between the shelf color and the wall or slope, use paint or wooden strips.

If you like, you can also send me exact measurements and photos, and I can try to provide a planning recommendation.

A few months ago, I bought BILLY shelves for a sloped attic space, and based on my experience, I can say:

The biggest challenge is proper stabilization. Despite adjustments for the slope and individual shelves, the unit was only truly secure when fixed to the wall.

It was also important to me that the appearance didn’t look too "DIY." That’s why I carefully modified only the back panels and didn’t cut any side panels. This provides more stability and looked very neat in my case.

You can try adjusting only the back panels first and see how the shelf stands. 🙂

I agree with that; adjusting step by step is the best approach, especially if you value safety and a clean look. Good luck with your project!

Wow, this is a great discussion! I just wanted to add that in my case, I used a BILLY shelf with a height of 106 cm (42 inches) and actually cut the back panel at an angle – it worked really well with a file and sandpaper for the finishing touches.

This creates excellent storage space without much construction!

And the best part: because of the white color, it looks very clean – perfectly matching the rest of the room. So, go for it :-)

I think your question is really well put, as many people face exactly this dilemma. Good luck!
