Good morning everyone, I am looking for effective ways to make operating the IKEA Brimnes drawers much easier. I have noticed that these drawers can sometimes be very stiff, which makes opening and closing them a real challenge, especially with larger or fully packed drawers. I mainly use them for clothing and smaller household items. I am particularly interested in practical tips or technical improvements that are easy to implement without having to replace the entire furniture series. Are there any special lubricants, mechanical aids, or modifications that have proven effective? Also, I am wondering whether adjusting the drawer slides is important or if material wear is more likely the cause. I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences with me.

Hello Lisarnold! Your question hits the mark because yes, those Brimnes drawers can be quite tricky when they get stuck. 😅 To make opening easier, I have two quick tips: First, you can use silicone spray – it works great if the runners squeak or stick. Second, I recommend wiping the drawer slides gently with a dry cloth, as dust is often underestimated! And if you want, you can also attach small felt pads inside to improve sliding. Sometimes it almost feels like you need to crack a secret formula, but often it's just the little helpers 😉!

Hello everyone, I would like to discuss this topic in more detail. The Brimnes drawers use simple metal runners, which are functional but can sometimes become difficult to operate due to their design and materials. Some points for optimization: - First, check whether the runners are clean and free of debris; grease and dust tend to accumulate easily. - For lubrication, I specifically recommend a dry PTFE-based spray instead of oil or grease, as the latter attract dust and can lead to long-term buildup. - If the drawers are wobbly, it is worth readjusting the side guides, as uneven alignment of the cabinet can make movement more difficult. - Additionally, the weight inside the drawers can play a role: overfilling often causes more friction than the mechanism alone. I am also interested in the environment where the furniture is placed and how intensively it is used, as for example moisture can cause the wood to swell slightly and thus restrict smooth movement.

That’s an important point, thank you! The furniture is located in a fairly temperate bedroom, with humidity usually around 40 to 55 percent. It is used daily, as I use the drawers for everyday clothing. Refilling or rearranging is rather rare so far, but I imagine that the load of several kilograms of fabrics and accessories increases resistance. I will start by measuring and adjusting the front and side runners, as honestly I haven’t paid enough attention to that. Does anyone have experience with tools to make fine adjustments more precisely?

In principle, precise adjustment of drawer slides on IKEA furniture is possible but requires some finesse. The Brimnes drawers have small adjustment screws on the sides that allow you to align the drawer horizontally and vertically. My tip: - Fully pull out the drawer to access the screws. - Use a suitable Phillips screwdriver to slowly adjust the screws, making only small turns each time to avoid overcorrection. - After each slight adjustment, briefly reinsert the drawer and check for smooth operation. Often, plastic glide pads placed in the tracks can help reduce friction. If the drawer still feels difficult to open, I would also recommend checking the slides for warping or damage, as slightly bent metal profiles can make opening more difficult.

Yes, the most important tool here is a fine Phillips screwdriver because the adjustment screws on IKEA furniture are very small. Additionally, a small mirror can help to get a better view of the screws. Some also recommend using very thin dial gauges or feeler gauges to check the gap between the drawer and the cabinet – I find this especially useful for precisely fitted furniture. Avoid using coarse tools or applying more force than necessary. Another tip is to use a small tape measure or ruler to measure the front or frame relative to the wall and the floor. Often, slight unevenness becomes visible, which is the cause of the sticking or rough movement.
