ISABELLEDE30 Jun 2022 09:37Hello everyone,
I want to optimize my IKEA Besta shelving unit as storage for all my work-from-home accessories. It’s not just about simple storage, but also about making the space as functional and organized as possible. Specifically, I’m looking for ideas on how to best use the individual modules and compartments to neatly store cables, documents, smaller electronic devices, and office supplies. Additionally, I’m interested in tips for combining it with extra inserts, dividers, or possibly suitable organizer elements to tailor the interior perfectly for a home office setup.
Do you have any experience or recommendations on how to most effectively organize the BESTA components for this purpose? I would really appreciate concrete furnishing ideas, clever storage solutions, or suggestions for compatible accessories that integrate well.

I want to optimize my IKEA BESTA shelving unit as storage for all my work-from-home accessories. For functional use of the BESTA modules, I recommend the following approach:
- Use inserts of varying heights, as BESTA offers compartments of different sizes. Small organizers for paper clips, USB sticks, etc., can be added in shallow drawers.
- Dividers or sorting boxes from the IKEA interior organization range (for example, VARIERA inserts) often fit well and help create order.
- Cable management can be achieved with inserts featuring cable openings or foam organizers to keep everything tidy and untangled.
- For documents, I suggest slim, vertical magazine files that can be placed in taller compartments or even on top of the unit.
- Optionally, you can fix small tools or pens to the inside of the doors using adhesive or magnetic strips.
Overall, you should carefully measure the dimensions of each compartment beforehand to choose suitable dividers and make the best use of the storage space.

I would recommend thinking about ergonomic handling alongside traditional organization. For example:
- Install removable inserts or small boxes for accessories you use frequently, so you can easily grab them and take them to your work area.
- To separate individual chargers and plugs, foam inserts with cutouts that can be adjusted flexibly are useful. This prevents cable clutter and avoids damage.
- For documents and notes, slim folders with clearly labeled sleeves help keep papers from getting lost deep inside.
- Use the back of doors, possibly equipped with customized hook rails or small metal boards, to hang frequently used pens or short cables. This saves interior space and ensures quick access.
For the BESTA modules, be sure to check the exact internal dimensions so your accessories don’t end up being too large. That would be frustrating.
One question for you: How much space do you have available overall, and what quantities of accessories do you specifically want to store—especially regarding tech and cables?

One question for you: How much total space do you have available, and what quantities of accessories do you specifically want to store – especially regarding technology and cables? Thanks for asking. Currently, it’s a BESTA unit measuring 120 cm (47 inches) wide, 64 cm (25 inches) high, and about 40 cm (16 inches) deep, divided into four compartments without many fixed dividers, which I still plan to add.
The quantities: I have several charging cables, two external hard drives, a small printer, various pens, notepads, USB sticks, a small box for batteries, as well as several document folders and a tablet case that is used occasionally.
The main challenge for me is to keep everything organized while also having quick access to the typical work supplies.
I was considering getting individual boxes made of plastic or fabric in different sizes, but I’m unsure if that might become too inflexible in the end. Is there perhaps more durable or flexible storage you could recommend? And how would you best fill the compartments when using such boxes?
