Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and would like to know how to clean it gently without causing scratches. I am especially interested in the best cleaning products and techniques to remove dust and light dirt while protecting the surface. I have tried various methods, but either dull spots remain or small scratches appear, which bother me. Are there any specific cleaning agents or homemade solutions that work particularly well? Also, should I use damp or dry cloths?

I would appreciate practical tips that take the surface material of the Billy bookcase into account.

Hello fevzi,

First of all: Good question! The Billy shelf usually has a melamine resin-coated surface, which is durable but can still be prone to scratches if not treated properly. I would recommend using only soft, lint-free microfiber cloths for cleaning – they are gentle and pick up dust very well.

As for cleaning agents: A simple, mild dish soap with warm water is completely sufficient. Just slightly dampen the cloth and wipe the surface. Important: Do not use abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the surface.

If you want to avoid streaks, you can follow up by wiping again with a dry microfiber cloth.

In summary: Soft cloth + mild cleaning agent + no abrasive products = no scratches. I hope this helps! 🙂

Hello fevzi,

to answer your question precisely: The surface of the Billy shelf unit is a melamine resin-coated particleboard, which means mechanical damage like scratches can easily occur from hard or abrasive cleaning agents.

The following points are especially important when cleaning:

1. Use only soft, non-abrasive cloths (microfiber is specifically recommended).
2. A diluted, mild, pH-neutral dish soap is suitable as a cleaning agent.
3. Avoid harsh solvents or abrasive cleaners, such as nail polish remover, baking soda, or scouring creams.
4. Never wipe with excessive water, as standing moisture can cause the edges to swell.

A simple solution with 1-2 drops of dish soap in about 1 liter (1 quart) of lukewarm water works best. Alternatively, there are special furniture care products for coated furniture that can provide additional protection to the surface.

If you already have scratches, colorless furniture polish or repair wax may be used in some cases, but for maintenance, caution with cleaning agents is highly recommended.

In short: Use only a damp microfiber cloth with a drop of mild dish soap and wipe gently. No abrasive cleaners or rough sponges. This prevents scratches.

Wiping dry afterwards does no harm.

The Billy shelf is made of laminated particleboard with a very thin protective layer, which makes it particularly vulnerable to abrasion. In addition to the methods mentioned, I recommend regularly dusting the shelf with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent dirt particles that could cause scratches during wiping from spreading.

If you need to remove tougher dirt, a specialized water-based furniture cleaner is suitable—ideally one specifically designed for plastic or laminate surfaces. These products are formulated to clean without damaging the material.

Make sure to test the product beforehand on an inconspicuous area and never rub aggressively.

Also, avoid wetting the shelf with a direct stream of water to prevent the boards from swelling.

Hey fevzi!

Your question is really important because everyone wants to keep their Billy shelf in good condition! 🙂 Recently, out of curiosity, I tried several cleaning methods myself – and the best results came from using dish soap with lukewarm water on a soft cloth.

The result? Really shiny and almost like new, with no scratches left behind. Also, polishing afterwards with a dry microfiber cloth gives a nice finish.

Very important: Never use harsh cleaners or abrasive cloths – that’s the ultimate killer for the surface!

Good luck! You’ve got this! 🙂
