Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and would like to know how to clean it gently without causing scratches. I am especially interested in the best cleaning products and techniques to remove dust and light dirt while protecting the surface. I have tried various methods, but either dull spots remain or small scratches appear, which bother me. Are there any specific cleaning agents or homemade solutions that work particularly well? Also, should I use damp or dry cloths?
I would appreciate practical tips that take the surface material of the Billy bookcase into account.

I would recommend using only soft, lint-free microfiber cloths for cleaning – they are gentle and absorb dust very well.Absolutely, microfiber cloths are Billy’s best friends! I clean mine almost every day with a slightly damp cloth, and it looks like new. If something stubborn sticks, just dip the cloth again in diluted dish soap and wipe gently.
One more tip: Always wipe in the direction of the grain; it really makes a difference in appearance! 😉

Never wipe with too much water, as standing moisture can cause the edges to swell. That’s a big advantage – small puddles on shelves and edges are poison for Billy. Better to clean more often and gently.

Care must be taken to avoid saturating the surface, and testing on an inconspicuous area is strongly recommended.
It is important not to use highly concentrated solvents or acetone, as these can dissolve the coating. After cleaning with the alcohol mixture, wipe again with a slightly damp cloth (water only), then dry thoroughly.
In summary, a combination of gentle cleaning and careful handling is key to avoiding scratches and maintaining the appearance.
