Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a KALLAX shelf unit and installed it on the wall according to the instructions. Despite screwing it in, the shelf still feels noticeably wobbly, especially when handling it or loading individual compartments heavily. The wall is made of solid brick, and the screws and wall plugs seem appropriate. However, the overall stability is not really satisfactory.

Does anyone else experience this? I wonder if this might be a common issue with KALLAX or if I made a mistake during installation. I attached the metal brackets as instructed, but maybe an additional reinforcement or a trick for a secure fix is needed?

I would really appreciate any tips, experiences, or advice to help me firmly and safely secure the shelf to the wall without it wobbling.

This issue can have several causes that should be ruled out systematically. First of all: What type of wall plugs did you use? For brick walls, plastic anchors are usually sufficient, but with hollow spaces or porous materials, the load may not be properly transferred.

Next, it is crucial whether the shelf is secured at multiple points or only in one spot. KALLAX shelves have a fairly simple design; screws only at the top rail often provide minimal resistance to tipping. Stability improves significantly if you also fix the sides of the shelf or reinforce it with a back panel.

The type of screws and the spacing of the fixing points are also important: large screws with good grip, spaced adequately apart, help distribute the tensile forces. Did you tighten the screws firmly with enough torque? Sometimes the shelf still feels loose if the screws are not seated properly or the wall surface is uneven.

Can you also say whether the wobbling occurs horizontally or vertically? And whether it happens only when one shelf compartment is loaded or in general? This would help to understand the direction of the forces.

In general, it is also possible to add an angle bracket or wall anchors for additional stability if the shelf is too large or heavily loaded. I’ll wait for your feedback so I can provide more targeted advice.

I know this all too well—the wobbly KALLAX phenomenon! 🙂

You start out fully motivated to screw everything together, and yet there’s still that annoying give or wobble. I’d say the screws themselves are often not the main issue, but rather how the weight is distributed across the shelf.

For me, it helped to add a few small brackets underneath as reinforcement. And very importantly: check if the wall is really flat. If the KALLAX unit isn’t perfectly flush against the wall, that alone can cause some wobbling… :-)

So my advice: reduce looseness, add more fastening points, and maybe pay a bit more attention to wall transitions next time you buy ready-to-assemble furniture. But hey, KALLAX remains a classic!

Wow, I had exactly the same problem! 🙂 I screwed the shelf firmly to the wall, but it still wobbled, just like in your case.

What really helped me was adding small non-slip pads at the front bottom, so the shelf base gets better grip on the floor. I also secured the back panel with extra nails – that made a difference!

Don’t get discouraged, it’s definitely fixable! 🙂 I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your shelf will be stable soon too!

First: What type of anchors did you use?

I used standard plastic anchors (6–8 mm (1/4–5/16 inch), suitable for the supplied screws) for a brick wall. No cavity or special anchors.

The shelf is attached to the wall at the top rail with two metal brackets, according to the instructions. So far, I haven’t added any more fixing points.

Mostly side-to-side wobbling when pressure is applied to one side or a compartment is loaded.

That sounds interesting, where exactly did you place the brackets? Only at the bottom or also on the sides?

Thanks already for the initial feedback!

I would recommend additionally securing the shelf to the side walls. The top rail alone rarely provides enough stability.

Also, you should check whether all screws are really tight and the anchors hold properly. If necessary, use stronger anchors.
