ᐅ KALLAX attached to the wall but still wobbly – does anyone else experience this?

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a KALLAX shelf unit and installed it on the wall according to the instructions. Despite screwing it in, the shelf still feels noticeably wobbly, especially when handling it or loading individual compartments heavily. The wall is made of solid brick, and the screws and wall plugs seem appropriate. However, the overall stability is not really satisfactory.

Does anyone else experience this? I wonder if this might be a common issue with KALLAX or if I made a mistake during installation. I attached the metal brackets as instructed, but maybe an additional reinforcement or a trick for a secure fix is needed?

I would really appreciate any tips, experiences, or advice to help me firmly and safely secure the shelf to the wall without it wobbling.

Thank you for the many detailed answers and tips so far.

Let me summarize:
- Use better, possibly metal expansion anchors.
- Attach additional brackets not only at the top but also on the sides and bottom.
- Securely fix the back panel (possibly to both the wall and the shelf).
- Fully screw in the screws and, if necessary, stabilize them with washers.
- Check the wall for unevenness and level it if needed.
- Consider adding extra non-slip measures on the shelf surface.

This sounds like a solid set of measures. I will proceed with all of these, especially the side brackets, which I had not taken into account in the original setup.

If anyone has practical advice on how to best compensate for unevenness when attaching metal brackets, I would be happy to hear it!

In practice, small spacer blocks made of wood or plastic, which are installed behind the brackets, have proven effective. This allows you to compensate for minor wall irregularities or surfaces that are not completely flat.

Alternatively, washers placed under the screw heads can be used to align the bracket properly. It is important to check the alignment with a spirit level before fully tightening the screws.

If the shelf is already installed and the wall is uneven, flexible mounting adhesive or felt pads can be added to prevent the shelf from wobbling on bumpy spots.

One really important point that I almost overlooked the first time: check the quality of the back panel! With KALLAX, the back panels are often made of thin particleboard or hardboard material that doesn’t provide much rigidity.

If the back panel material is loose or bends easily, wobbling is almost unavoidable.

I reinforced mine by adding a thin plywood sheet of the same thickness as the back panel, which made the shelf much more stable.

It might be worth considering, even though it requires a bit more effort.
